Kirstie Alley Backs Scientology and Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has been shed in an unfair light since his divorce from Katie Holmes on June 29 because of his beliefs in the Church of Scientology. Kirstie Alley, a fellow Scientologist, is defending Cruise and the church after reports surfaced that Holmes divorced Cruise so Suri would not grow-up in the religion. Other allegations include that the church actually auditioned potential girlfriends for Cruise back in 2004.

On ‘Entertainment Tonight,’ Alley talked about the claims and offered an explanation as to why she wanted to defend Cruise, one of her friends.

“I think whenever you have articles written that are third and fourth parties’ opinions – it’s like the game Gossip and you don’t get the truth – I think that a magazine of that caliber should have interviewed him, and then they would get the truth,” Alley said on the show.

Alley has been a Scientologist for quite a long time now, so she finds it easy to defend the religion.

“I think that probably all religions sound bizarre to the people who are not the practitioners of them. … To me it’s so normal, and probably 90% of the crazy stuff I hear isn’t true.”

Alley has defended the religion previously, specifically in 2010, when she became upset with ‘Today’ host Meredith Vieira asking her about a diet she was using. Alley said the “‘Today Show’ brought fringe bigotry and intolerance into the forefront of the national media.”

“Why speculation goes mainstream is still beyond me. It’s gone on forever. I’ve been a Scientologist for over 30 years. I think a lot of things are sensationalized. The media can throw ‘The controversial Church of Scientology — and the fat girl in their religion.’ That’s funny. I thought there were like eight f***ing million fat Catholics,” Alley also said about the incident with Vieira on the ‘Today’ show.
