Graduate of Ohio State Foregoes Law School to Drive Oscar Mayer Wienermobile

According to Ohio State’s newspaper, The Lantern, graduate Theresa Brenner decided to work as an Oscar Mayer Wienermobile driver instead of preparing to attend law school. She even missed graduation in June so she could train as one of 12 brand new drivers of the vehicle across the country. There were 1,300 applicants for the job.

Brenner called her older sister, Betsy, another Ohio State graduate, when she found out she got the job.

“I have heard from her and the people she was friends with while she has a hotdogger how great it is, a job where you travel,” Brenner said. “There’s a lot of responsibility, but all these positives that I heard from her and I just applied online.”

Theresa was in the middle of her senior year, sending applications to law schools and other job opportunities when she sent an application in for the Oscar Mayer job. She decided to put law school on hold when she learned she got the job. The job is for one year, with it scheduled to end in June of 2013.

“My dad said he was proud,” Theresa Brenner said. “I said to (my parents), ‘Am I silly to turn down law school and take this opportunity?’ and they said, ‘No, Theresa, go for it.’”

Brenner said she has yet to plan what she will be doing after the job comes to an end.

“I deferred admissions to three different law schools, so I’ll most likely take that up but still do networking and look at other cities that I love and other great opportunities along the way,” she said. “I’m not going to pigeonhole myself or get tunnel vision and not take advantage of the great opportunities that lie along the hot dog highways.”

Brenner said that the job was a dream come true for her.

“What other job gives you the chance to travel, learn professional skills and have a great time? It’s a really competitive position that makes you stand out.”
