Lawyer Resigns from Firm Following Col. Custer Emails

Pat Rogers, a republican attorney, has resigned from the law firm of Modrall Sperling this past Friday. He has resigned from his job because of emails with inappropriate content in them being leaked to the media. One of the emails in question had Rogers channeling is inner Col. George Armstrong Custer, who was killed with all of his soldiers at the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Not long after New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez had a meeting with Native American leaders, which is a law, an email was sent to Martinez’s top administrators by Rogers that said:

“Quislings, French surrender monkeys, secret supporters (all along) of JAJ [Janice Arnold Jones]

The state is going to hell. Col. Weh would not have dishonored Col Custer in this manner.

I hope who ever recommended this is required to read the entire redist [redistricting law suit] transcript and sit through the entire meeting with the Gov.”

The email was described as a joke by Rogers. In a statement from the law firm’s president, R.E. Thompson, said, “Recent revelations of private e-mail communications have distracted from our mission, and Pat Rogers has tendered his resignation from the Firm. His resignation has been accepted, and we thank him.”

Rogers has had problems with inappropriate emails in the past. In July, it was discovered through emails that he was making public decisions and staffing decisions, forcing him to resign from the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government. Rogers is also the National Committeeman for the New Mexico Republican State Committee and attended the Republican National Convention.

“As the face of New Mexico’s Republican Party and a lobbyist for a number of corporations that do business on tribal lands, Mr. Rogers’ derogatory remarks are particularly insulting and have no place in modern discussions of politics and policy,” said Pat Davis, Executive Director of ProgressNow New Mexico. “We wish Mr. Rogers the best in his future endeavors and hope that he will also see fit to step aside from his postition representing New Mexico to the nation through his Republican Party post.”
