According to radio station WWVA, workers at Century Mine in Beallsville, Ohio, feared they would lose their jobs if they did not forfeit a day of pay for attending a Mitt Romney campaign event held at the mine in August. The company that owns the mine is Murray Energy Company. Its Chief Financial Officer, Rob Moore, has repeatedly denied claims made by employees that they had to attend the event. He did say that the employees were not issued payment for the day of the event.
“Our managers communicated to our workforce that the attendance at the Romney event was mandatory, but no one was forced to attend,” Moore said.
The CEO of the company is Bob Murray, who teamed with Romney for a fundraising event in West Virginia back in May. The company has also donated over $900,000 to candidates in the Republican Party over the past two years. This data has been provided by the Center for Responsive Politics.
Murray has also made it known how he disapproves of President Barack Obama’s position on coal. Moore told WWVA that having the coal employees at the Romney event “was in the best interest of anyone that’s related to the coal industry in this area or the entire country.”
