On Tuesday, the Republican Party approved its platform at the Republican National Convention in Florida. Part of the platform will place a ban on all abortions, change Medicare to a voucher program, ban gay marriage and trim taxes in an effort to boost the economy and bring in new jobs. Every four years, the Republican and Democratic parties meet and typically issue their platforms for the coming years. The Republicans did so on Tuesday.

The Republican platform says that “Today that American Dream is at risk.” The platform also claims that the party will “begin anew, with profound changes in the way government operates; the way it budgets, taxes and regulates.”

The Pew Research Center discovered in a new poll that there are more people interested in the platform from the Republicans than the acceptance speeches of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

“This ambitious blueprint projects a sea change in the way that government works,” said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. McDonnell was in charge of the party’s platform committee. “It offers a solution for workers without jobs, families without savings and neighborhoods without hope.”

The Democratic Party responded to the GOP platform almost immediately, tying it to Romney. Romney has said that he would permit abortions to take place in the event of rape, when the life of the mother is threatened and incest. One Democrat who spoke against the GOP platform was Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles. “What you have seen from him is that he does one thing, he says another,” Villaraigosa said. “He has taken one position after another, time and again you know, and you can’t have it both ways.”

The GOP platform states on the topic of abortion that, “the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.”

In other areas of the GOP platform, the Republicans said that the best way to create jobs is to stimulate the economy. “We do not offer yet another made-in-Washington package of subsidies and spending to create temporary or artificial jobs.” The platform will also work towards changing tax code for small businesses so they can create more jobs and acquire more capital.

In another controversial topic, the GOP announced in its platform that the states and the federal government have the right to deny same-sex marriage. The platform is offering its support for an amendment to the constitution that outlines marriage as being between a woman and a man.
