Harvard Law School Forms Partnership with Qatar Foundation

The Qatar Foundation and the Institute for Global Law and Policy from Harvard Law School have formed a partnership. The Qatar Foundation is an education and economic development organization. The two formed a partnership because a graduate law school is being formed in Doha. Faculty members from Harvard will advise administrators about admissions, curriculum and other administrative issues as the new school is created. Harvard will also help to create collaborations and exchanges of research.

“It’s an honor to have been asked to help advise the Qatar Foundation as it develops its plans to build a world class law school in Qatar,” David Kennedy said. Kennedy is the director of the Harvard Law School Institute for Global Law and Policy. “Our own faculty development initiative to be launched this year will become a strong component in that broader effort and strengthen education in law and policy both in Qatar and the Arab region and beyond.”

The law school is planned for Hamad bin Khalifa University in Doha. The school will offer a research institute, a doctoral program and a program for faculty-development. The foundation was created in 1995 by Amir Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani when he took over the position of head of state.

“At the heart of this cooperation is Qatar Foundation’s vision to establish a center of learning that will help revitalize legal education in the Middle East, and represent Islamic and Arabic legal traditions in the global dialogue on legal and governance issues,” Mohammad Fathy Saoud. Saoud is the president of the foundation.
