Texas A&M Students Create Human Wall at an Alum’s Funeral

A alum of Texas A&M was killed during a training exercise at Fort Bragg by another soldier who then shot himself on June 28. The Texas A&M alum, Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale, was shown support in the hundreds by students at the school on the day of his funeral. The school’s students learned that the Westboro Baptist Church, which protests at funerals for soldiers using anti-gay messages, was planning to protest at the funeral for Tisdale when the church posted plans on its website.

Ryan Slezia, a Texas A&M student, had the idea to create a human wall that could block the protestors from getting anywhere near the funeral. Slezia invited all his fellow students and alum to join the human wall. One of the members of the human wall tweeted that close to 650 people were in attendance to fortify the wall, which was made of maroon. It seems that no one from the Westboro Baptist Church came out to protest that day. The pictures are below, with tweets of participants, and they are moving.

“‪#MaroonWall‬ at Central Baptist. No sign of Westboro …. hope they aren’t too intimidated.”

“God bless the ‪#MaroonWall‬ today protecting family of Lt Col Roy Tisdale class of ’93 from protesters at his funeral.”
