Legally Brain Dead Woman Gives Birth to Twins

A 26-year-old woman from Michigan recently gave birth to twin boys after she was declared brain dead because of two brain aneurysms she suffered. Christine Bolden was leaving a building in Grand Rapids with her boyfriend and 3-year-old son when she felt a severe pain in her head on March 6. Bolden collapsed to the ground immediately. The twins, Alexander and Nicholas, were born by C-section and are only 25 weeks old. The twins are premature, with Alexander weighing 1 pound 4 ounces and Nicholas weighing 1 pound 9 ounces. Both boys are less than six inches long.

“It was a hurting feeling,” her Aunt Danielle Bolden said. “Going [to the hospital] seeing her laying there.”

The family hopes that the boys survive despite grieving about Bolden’s situation.

“We used to rub on her belly and talk to the babies,” Danielle said.

The twins needed to be taken out of Christine’s body because her blood pressure became too high, making the situation dangerous for the boys. Christine’s grandmother even asked the doctors not to ‘numb her’ while the surgery took place in hopes that Christine would feel the pain of the surgery and then wake up.

“God, he could have took her and the boys,” said Danielle. “But he left the boys. That’s a miracle.”

“I can’t wait to be able to touch them and pick them up and tell them all about their mother and give them so much love,” Vance Terrell, Christine’s brother said. “They’re so precious.”

This is not the first time a woman in a coma has been able to give birth. Back in 2001, Chastity Cooper carried her baby to full-term even though she fell into a coma following a car accident. Cooper was only two weeks along in her pregnancy at the time of the car accident. Then, as recently as 2010, a baby named Idil was born to a woman in Somalia who suffered a brain tumor that put her into a coma.

“What am I going to say to my family when (Idil) grows up? That she is a living miracle!” the baby’s father, Issa, said.
