The governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, received an earful from President Barack Obama when she greeted him on the tarmac just outside of Phoenix yesterday. The two government leaders were seen engaged in a heated discussion at the base of the Air Force One steps. Both were seen smiling but speaking at the same time.
Brewer said, “He was a little disturbed about my book.”
A book was recently published by Brewer titled, “Scorpions for Breakfast.” The book is a bit of a memoir from her years growing up and also defends her signing of the controversial law that allows Arizona to crack down on undocumented immigrants. The law is strongly opposed by Obama.
Obama had been objecting to a description of a meeting the two had at the White House, where she claims she was being lectured by Obama. In a television interview in November, Brewer said the first of two tense meetings occurred prior to his commencement speech at Arizona State University. “He did blow me off at ASU,” she said.
When the two met at the White House back in 2010 to discuss immigration she said, “I felt a little bit like I was being lectured to, and I was a little kid in a classroom, if you will, and he was this wise professor and I was this little kid, and this little kid knows what the problem is and I felt minimized to say the least.”
On Wednesday, on the tarmac, Brewer gave Obama an envelope that contained a handwritten invitation to return to Arizona so he could meet her for lunch and then visit the border.
“I said to him, you know, I have always respected the office of the president and that the book is what the book is,” she said. Brewer then said that Obama complained to her because she described him as not treating him cordially.
“I said that I was sorry that he felt that way. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here, and we’ll regroup.”
