Private Detective Sentenced for Rape and Falsifying Crimes

A private detective from Queens who raped his ex-girlfriend and then framed her for false crimes has been sentenced to 32 years in prison. The private detective, Jerry Ramrattan, used info from television shows such as ‘C.S.I.,’ to orchestrate one of the most impressive and elaborate frame-ups in history.

Seemona Sumasar, 36, accused Ramrattan of raping her. After Sumasar said she would not drop the rape charges, Ramrattan came up with a scheme that led her to jail for seven months. He made it appear that Sumasar was the perpetrator of a handful of armed robberies, for which she was accused of impersonating a police officer during those robberies.

Ramrattan extorted witnesses to provide false testimony that Sumasar had robbed them. Prosecutors in the State Supreme Court in Queens also said that Ramrattan had faked crime scenes by planting evidence and handcuffing a supposed victim of Sumasar to a pole. At one of the false crime scenes, Ramrattan even planted a couple of bullets.

Sumasar delivered a victim statement prior to the sentencing for Ramrattan on Wednesday. She noted that Ramrattan showed no visible remorse for his crimes and that he would have gone to any length to destroy her because of revenge. “I don’t have words for you,” she said. “You are pure evil. You are a sociopath. You need help. Someone needs to put a stop to your madness,” she added.

While Sumasar spent seven months in jail she missed time with her daughter, lost her business, and her house went into foreclosure. The bail for Sumasar was set at $1 million, a fee she could not pay. Ramrattan was a free man until an informant told authorities in 2010 about his plans.

Ramrattan was convicted of rape, conspiracy, and perjury back in November. The trial lasted for almost one month and it provided two opposing plot lines. The prosecution portrayed Sumasar as a single mother who was duped by a malicious man. The defense then painted a picture of Sumasar saying that she was dejected after Ramrattan decided to leave her and go back to his wife and family.

Ramrattan, in a plea for leniency, said the following, “I stand before you with no choice but to accept what is going to happen,” he said. “Think about all the cases I made over the years, the rape victims I assisted. I maintain my innocence.”

Ramrattan then said, “There is more to come.”

Judge Justice Buchter said the following, “The police were duped by liars by whom they had a right to be suspicious, and as a result a rape victim was framed by her rapist,” the judge said. “She was victimized by the rapist and then again by the criminal justice system. The defendant is the architect of his own ruin. He deserves no mercy from me, and he won’t get any.”
