Every Step Counts 5K

Yesterday morning I was up bright and early: 5:15am

So why in the world was I up so early on a Saturday morning? Well it was for a very good reason!

RUNNING.

I got my running gear on and headed out to the suburbs to run 7 miles with Chelsey, and then we ran a 5K! Haha, you might be wondering why… Well, Chelsey needed to run 10 miles in her training for a half-marathon, and I love running with Chelsey! I’ve learned to love running with a buddy, and wasn’t about to turn down a good run!

We met up where the 5K was taking place and headed out for our 7 miles. We ended up finishing in about 1 hour and 3 minutes, which, to us, was shocking! The wind was against us for quite a bit of the run and both of us felt like we were slagging. Guess not!

We finished earlier than expected, so we had plenty of time to get our bib numbers and stretch out for the 5K. Unfortunately, this meant we were freezing cold! Sweaty shirts + 44 degrees = two chilly runners!

The 5K, however, was totally worth it.

We ran in the Every Step Counts 5K, which was hosted by the Youth Group of Orland Park Church and meant to raise money for the families of two local girls struck by devastating diseases. I describe the race in more detail in this post.

Chelsey has some mutual friends and family members with one of the girls, so when she posted about the run last week, I told her that I would be there!

The race actually went by pretty quickly! It was a lot larger than I’d anticipated; about 600 participants! The path took us through a neighborhood and then a park, and luckily the wind wasn’t as bad during the 5K. The finish line was great because there was a DJ playing some serious pump-up music!

Those last 3 miles were pretty rough for me though, my legs DID NOT want to move. I think they were confused as to why we headed back out… If it weren’t for Chelsey, there’s no way I would have finished that 5K without walking.

I don’t know our final time yet, but I’m not too concerned. We ran it for fun and I enjoyed the opportunity to both hang out with a friend and do something that felt worthwhile!

I promptly drove back to the city, showered, ate, pretended to study for 30 min, and finally gave in and took a nap!

I’ve got to rest up because tomorrow I’ll be spending the day (and the next two days after that) with a very special friend. Can you guess who?

What was the best/most fun thing you’ve done this weekend?

Do you like having running buddies, or hitting the pavement alone?
