Culture and Law Firms

The culture of a law firm is essential and is composed of many values. For law firm culture to be created, the different members of the law firm are expected to share similar values with one another. These many values help the law firm to decide what is and is not acceptable at the firm. The values of a firm also help all members of the law firm work together to be as successful as possible. The success of a firm is most important.

There are specific core values that make a law firm whole. Before joining a firm, one should know what the law firm expects, what it means to be a member of that specific firm, and how the law firm operates. Different law firms operate on different values. David Maister, the author of Strategy and the Fat Smoker, once said, “You’ll never be good enough as a firm if participation in excellence is optional. Everyone in the firm has to decide they want to sacrifice some of the present to achieve a better tomorrow.” This means that excellence is not an option, it is a necessity. Members of a law firm need to be excellent in order for the firm to operate properly.

Certain values are expected in a law firm. The most important value is integrity. It is important for members to have consistency and moral character. Motivation is also essential in a law firm because members need to have the desire to work and get things done. Members should motivate themselves as well as others. Members of a firm must be knowledgeable and have a complete understanding of their work and what is expected of them at the firm. Experience is another important value to have as a member of a law firm. With the proper education and experience, members will be able to strive for the best for clients and the firm will become more successful.

Members of a law firm need to know how to express themselves. If they cannot express themselves, they will not last in the industry. They must have that personal drive that keeps them moving forward. Members of law firms who have “drive” will continue to motivate themselves and will have a higher success and achievement rate compared to other members who do not have that personal drive.

It is necessary for a law firm to have positive culture. When law firms hire attorneys to work at their company, they look for certain values in that person. It is important that the person has talent as an attorney while still maintaining certain morals that will help the company to succeed and expand. To ensure positive culture in a law firm, law firm companies must create new techniques for the hiring process. These law firms will have to choose attorneys wisely and make sure that they are on the same page when it comes to values and morals.
