Ivory Coast signs accord to allow ICC investigation to proceed

Although not a member of the ICC, Justice Minister Jeannot Ahoussou Kouadio of the Ivory Coast, signed an agreement recently that would allow the court to allow an investigation into political violence to proceed in his country. Because the ICC is not a member state of the ICC and a signatory of the Rome statue, the ICC can only investigate matters within the country with the Ivory Coast’s express permission. The Court’s investigation will look into violence committed by both the ousted leader Laurent Gbagbo as well as the current president, Alassane Ouattara, and his party.
