Last week, the US Department of Justice reviewed the 2009 Amnesty vs. Blai case that pertained to the potentially illegal invasion of privacy involved in wiretapping; specifically wiretapping of individuals outside of the United States. A three judge panel concluded that the plaintiffs had a legitimate case because the law put individuals outside the United States in a “lose lose” scenario, in which they would either have to live with possibility of being monitored without cause, or would have to take actions at their own expense and effort to ensure that they were not being monitored. Some, like the ACLU, felt that monitoring certain individuals outside of the United States is a critical part of national security and have publicly criticized the review.
