2,000 Jobs Lost in September for the Legal Sector

Unless you live in a cave, by now you’ve probably heard that the latest numbers from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics show that we lost another 263,000 jobs in September, nationwide. 2,000 of those jobs came from the legal sector, when the numbers are seasonally adjusted. Without seasonal adjustments the legal sector lost 13,600 jobs, but that’s most likely caused by large numbers of summer associates returning back to school.

We report here on layoffs from big law firms, and for the past two weeks no big law firms have laid off attorneys although Cooley Godward did let go of some staffat the end of last week. These numbers are a sobering reminder that there are plenty of lawyers and legal staff outside the biglaw world that are struggling as well.
