John Ashcroft to Found Law Firm

John D. Ashcroft, the former Missouri governor, US attorney general, senator and state attorney general, will announce this week plans to found a law firm.

Ashcroft formed The Ashcroft Group, a lobbying and consulting firm, in 2005.

Bush-era US Attorney Catherine Hanaway is leaving her position to join Ashcroft at the new firm. First Assistant US Attorney Michael Reap will assume her duties starting today. Hanaway was formerly the top federal prosecutor for eastern Missouri.

The law firm will be headquartered in Kansas City. Hanaway will work out of St. Louis, while Ashcroft will be based in Washington DC.

Hanaway says the law firm would focus on “complex litigation.” Based on Ashcroft’s history, we can only assume that complex litigation will involve publicly defending racists who plot to kill FBI agents; eroding civil liberties; covering nude statues; prosecuting celebrities on minor marijuana charges; and writing terrible songs.
