Established, prominent defense law firm seeking qualified attorneys in East Lansing, MI to join our insurance defense team to help continue our success including areas of: medical malpractice and first party no-fault insurance personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. Our firm offers a sophisticated yet collegial atmosphere and is located in downtown East Lansing, a vibrant mid-west university town. This is an exciting opportunity for an attorney with experience in litigation including depositions, motion practice, and trial work. In addition, this position provides a great opportunity to litigate cases and gain significant trial experience Qualifications Candidate must be admitted to practice in MI and have 3-5 years of litigation experience. Applicants should be bright, enthusiastic, comfortable communicating with clients, possess the ability to manage a caseload and work well with a team of attorneys to ensure the best outcome for our clients. The capability to handle depositions and court appearances is preferred, as well as excellent writing and research skills. This is an ideal position for a candidate who wants to hone and develop their litigation talents in an environment that promotes growth and independence while also providing partner supervision and mentoring. Responsibilities: Uses litigation practices/protocols to develop and revise appropriate legal strategy for discovery, investigation, handling and hearing of cases or matters; advises, communicates and develops those strategies along with insurance adjustors and clients as appropriate. Conducts necessary and appropriate discovery, hearings, trials, depositions, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations and similar proceedings. Researches the law applicable to cases or matters. Drafts legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs and opinions as required. If requested, conducts settlement negotiations. The qualified candidate will have significant experience in taking and producing witnesses for deposition, dispositive motion preparation and argument, retention and production of experts, negotiations, interpersonal skills in dealing with and counseling clients, and the ability to analyze and develop a strategy for the direction of a case and execute that game plan. Consistently fulfill minimum hourly billing requirements. Experience: Completion of law school with LLB or JD. A minimum of 3 successful years’ experience as an attorney. General knowledge of insurance law, medical malpractice, first party no-fault insurance personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. The ability to effectively communicate and persuade by written or spoken word is critical. Proficiency in legal research utilizing Westlaw, Internet and other sources. Must be able to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences. Minimum 3 years’ experience in insurance coverage (defense or plaintiff). Strong experience with motion practice, discovery dispute, conducting depositions, making court experiences and trial preparation. Excellent oral advocacy and written communication skills. Comfortable presenting cases in front of judges and juries.
