The organization is funded by international philanthropic foundations and advocates for environmental protection by engaging with high-emission companies, investors, and industry associations to request them to fully align their emission reduction targets and business practices with the 1.5-degree Paris Agreement goal. Using a range of strategies including stakeholder advocacy, negotiation, and advice on sustainability initiatives, our client will work with boards and the management of companies to increase understanding of climate risk and opportunities and strengthen climate governance, disclosure, reporting and transition plans. Our client will expand its activities by widening its funder-base and by expanding collaboration with other sustainability-focused expert partners and stakeholders, including leading global climate action organizations, with the vision of a swift transition of the Japanese economy to an emission-free and safe environment. Responsible for all internal legal and compliance issues in this start-up NGO, you will also collaborate with the engagement leads, sharing your legal expertise and advising and strategizing on engagement with target organizations. You will meet and negotiate with a wide range of organizations across broad industry sectors and advise the engagement team on when and how to use legal tactics for successful shareholder advocacy. You will be supported with industry insights expertise from the engagement team. Additionally, you will: Collaborate internally and with external partners to maximize engagement capacity Provide legal and compliance guidance for communications with investors Expertly respond to legal activity queries from investors and proxy advisors Skills Required You will be a Japan-qualified lawyer (bengoshi) with substantial (min 5 to 7 years) in corporate practice and advanced knowledge of the Companies Act of Japan and familiarity with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act of Japan. Ideally you will also be familiar with the Financial Exchange Instrument Act of Japan. You have strong experience negotiating challenging commercial transactions or in controversial disputes with large Japanese corporations and you have the strong desire to use your experience to help achieve carbon neutrality.
