Join the California Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General to help administer justice on behalf of 40 million Californians. Our Health, Education and Welfare section (HEW) is looking for seasoned litigators to join our team!  HEW attorneys represent over 30 state agencies that administer a multitude of state health, education, and welfare programs.

LOCATION:  HEW is hiring statewide.  This is a hybrid position with the opportunity to work remotely or in the office, with 2-3 required in-person days each month.  Candidates must reside in California.

DUTIES:

  • Managing all phases of litigation in both state and federal trial and appellate courts
  • Carrying a varied caseload
  • Submitting extensive briefing in both trial and appellate courts on issues of first impression
  • Handling all aspects of civil trials, writ proceedings, and complex class actions
  • Defending against challenges to the Medi-Cal program (e.g., constitutional challenges to reimbursement rates, complex provider audits and suspensions); the practices and policies of state mental hospitals and developmental centers; statewide educational programs (e.g., monitoring of English Language Learners, audits of public educational funds); and public health issues such as the defense of nursing home citations

QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Recent experience in civil, criminal, or administrative litigation
  • Superior writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Ability to present statements of fact, law, and argument clearly and logically in written and oral form
  • Good working knowledge of the rules of evidence
  • Strong interest in and aptitude for handling a caseload that requires a full range of litigation skills, including motion practice, witness examination, evidentiary objections, opening statements and closing arguments, deposition skills, and written discovery
  • Ability to work independently, while applying excellent legal judgment and producing high quality work.
  • Ability to handle a rigorous caseload under tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in electronic case management and time keeping
  • A genuine interest in government employment

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:
Deputy Attorney General (fewer that 6 years of experience):  $7,153.00- $10,836.00
Deputy Attorney General III (at least 6 years of legal experience):  $10,225.00 - $13,118.00
Deputy Attorney General IV (at least 10 years of legal experience):  $11,296.00 - $14,503.00
Deputy Attorney General V:  $11,932.00 - $15,228.00
