LEGAL EXTERN/LITIGATION LAW CLERK
Old Towne Associates, P.C. (“OTA”) is a local law firm representing employees who stand up to wrongdoing in the workplace with matters involving civil rights, labor, and employment law. OTA is looking for two upcoming 1st and 2nd year (Class of 2021 and 2022) law students at VA and DC area schools (i.e., American, Catholic, Georgetown, George Mason, George Washington, or UDC) to join our team as Legal Externs/Litigation Law Clerk.

Throughout their tenure at OTA, our Legal Externs/Litigation Law Clerk gain substantive hands-on legal experience that develops their lawyering skills daily as they learn the legal procedure, litigation strategy, and client advocacy through their work. This is an excellent opportunity for students to put their law school education to practical use, to gain a better understanding of the practice of law, and to see first-hand how strong work product can have a great impact on our clients, our practice, and case precedent.

We are only considering candidates who have GRIT, are detail-oriented, proactive and highly motivated and are able to manage multiple priorities and their time well. They must exhibit the highest standards of excellence, good judgment, professional confidentiality and integrity, and display, at all times and to all persons, a courteous and professional attitude. They must possess excellent academic credentials, strong research and writing skills, and superior analytical ability. The selected Legal Externs/Litigation Law Clerk will gain invaluable practical experience working directly with the Principal and Firm clients on cases to provide high-level assistance throughout all phases of litigation and trial work. This is a wonderful mentorship opportunity for law students to learn the nuts and bolts of law practice.

Duties

  • Assist attorneys with handling a diverse portfolio of legal matters
  • Perform substantive and procedural legal research and summarize your research assignments for attorneys
  • Assist attorneys with drafting EEOC and NLRB administrative documents
  • Assist attorneys with drafting legal memoranda, complaints, substantive preliminary and trial motions and oppositions, and appeal motions
  • Assist attorneys with preparing discovery requests, responses and document productions
  • Assist attorneys with preparing discovery deficiency letters
  • Assist attorneys with drafting proposed orders and letters to the court
  • Assist attorneys with issuing subpoenas and preparing for court hearings
  • Summarize deposition testimony
  • Prepare deposition, trial, and expert materials
  • Provide on-site trial support, as needed
  • Calendar meetings, depositions, hearings, trial dates, and other events, as necessary for attorneys and other attendees
  • Attend mediations, depositions, and court proceedings with attorneys, as needed
  • Post daily time entries into client billing system
  • Review local rules and court orders
  • Manage time to ensure that tasks are completed on time
  • Other responsibilities, as assigned

Other Considerations

Legal Externs/Litigation Law Clerk are provided with training, support, and flexibility to balance busy caseloads with their school schedule. In return for their work with our Firm they receive course credit and a modest stipend.

Business Disputes Old Towne Associates, P.C. represents individuals and select corporate clients in business disputes. Some examples of business disputes include: Breach of fiduciary duty: defend clients from breach of fiduciary duty claims as well as press claims on their behalf when corporate executives/employees breach their fiduciary duties to the corporation and its shareholders. Fraud: defend clients from fraud claims or press claims on their behalf when corporate executives/employees commit fraud against the corporation and its shareholders. Breach of contract: counsel clients on their contractual rights under sales compensation plans and other agreements made between the employer and employee. Conspiracy: defend clients from conspiracy claims as well as counsel clients on identifying and pursuing co-conspirators in actions that have injured them or their corporate interests. Deceptive advertising: counsel clients on establishing procedures for avoiding deceptive advertising and in evaluating possible advertising initiatives and defend corporate clients in court. Defamation and libel: counsel clients on protecting their reputation, goods and/or services from negative commentary by past and present corporate executives/employees, competitors or others, including the media and defend client’s reputation in court. Direct liability of employers for employee torts: counsel corporate clients in establishing effective screening processes for employees and agents. Defend corporate clients against claims of direct liability for negligent hiring or supervision. Employment contracts and restrictive covenants: draft and review employment contracts and restrictive covenants for clients. Defend individual clients from unenforceable restrictive covenants; which may include confidentiality, non-solicitation and/or non-compete clauses. Pursue emergency injunctive relief for corporate clients to enforce restrictive covenants. Third party interference in contractual or contractual business relationships: pursue causes of action against third parties who have interfered with prospective contracts and lawful contractual business relationships, and with employees under contract and restrictive covenants with corporate clients; also defend clients against these same allegations.
