Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, Inc. (GBLA), a non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal assistance to people living with low income/low opportunity seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Public Benefits Unit. The Public Benefits Unit assists individuals who are having difficulty accessing or maintaining health and income maintenance benefits such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance, and other benefits. The Program also addresses issues related to Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income and Medicare as resources permit. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for representing clients in matters before state and federal agencies. Responsibilities include case management, legal research and writing, drafting of administrative and court documents, representation in administrative hearings and litigation in state and federal courts. The position also will involve community outreach activities and participating in collaborative efforts with agency partners on public benefits matters. Requirements Active membership in the California State Bar. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred 1-3 years demonstrated experience of public benefits or healthcare advocacy experience preferred. Familiarity with mental health issues, and state and federal laws regarding disability benefits (SSI, SSDI, OA-HIPP, ADAP, Covered California, Medi-Cal, Medicare, etc.) preferred Demonstrated commitment to working with low-income communities Excellent oral/written communication skills Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently Ability to be sensitive to and work well with low-income individuals, people with psychiatric disabilities, active drug users, people with a history of homelessness or incarceration. Must have own transportation, valid CA Driver’s license, and insurance Compensation This attorney position is a salaried with position with an annual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. ($65,856- $74,122). GBLA offers a generous benefit package, a 37.5-hour workweek, paid sick and vacation leave. 100% employer-paid medical premium for employee (dependent coverage optional though a Sec 125 plan paid by employee) 100% employer-paid premium dental and life insurance for employee and dependents. 100% employer paid long/short term disability for employee.
