Profile

Position Title: Staff Attorney (Full-time) Location: Plant City

Position Description: This position is funded under the Lawyers Helping Kids (LHK) grant which is funded by The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. The Attorney in this position will have a caseload and provide legal representation to individuals who are expecting a child or have a young child through fifth grade. The attorney will work with a team of approximately six other attorneys and support staff. There may be occasional opportunities for community outreach and participation in special projects.

Illustrative Duties:

  • Representation in civil court including emergency advocacy.
  • Providing advocacy to clients, some of whom speak English as a second language.
  • Referrals to social and health care agencies and various community partners in supportof holistic assistance to those experiencing legal problems.
  • Practice in traditional areas of public interest law including housing, family law,landlord/tenant matters and other substantive matters as appropriate.
  • Training of community partners, community outreach and work related events.
  • Community partnership events as appropriate.
  • Interview applicants and determine if eligibility requirements for established legalservices are satisfied. Documents all client case information and related time spent incase management system accurately and timely. Ensure compliance with Legal ServicesCorporation (LSC) or other grantor requirements.
  • Communicate with clients to learn about their legal needs and concerns, counsel, adviseand refer them to other full service teams or branch offices within Bay Area Legal, or toappropriate public agencies or other community resources for additional servicesneeded.
  • Explain legal options and bring possible outcomes or risks to their attention.
  • Develop and implement strategies to resolve cases favorably. Prepare legal documents,such as contracts, dispositions, briefs, oral arguments, and pleadings, accurately and in atimely manner. Research relevant legal materials to aid decision making, gather andanalyze evidence, identify implications for cases from legal precedents or other legalinformation. Negotiate settlement of cases with opposing attorneys or parties. Prepare necessary correspondence relating to services rendered. Create and maintain relationships with organizations that are commonly adverse parties where possible to facilitate case resolution. Attend team meetings and collaborate with other attorneys on case questions. •Develop arguments and represent clients participating in hearings before various courtsand administrative bodies. Present and summarize cases to judges and juries.
  • Travel to client meetings or hearings as necessary.
  • Assist other poverty program components as needed and offer advice in publicrelations, participates in appropriate community activities. This includes participation inBALS in-house committees and outside community/Florida Bar events when asked orneeded.
  • Stay informed about current legislation, especially assigned legal specialties. AttendContinuing Legal Education (CLE) courses and/or other trainings to maintain knowledgein areas of expertise or gain new knowledge.
  • Participate in appropriate community and statewide activities to support and promoteand further the work of Bay Area Legal Services.
  • Assist in developing and updating appropriate legal advice and brief services letters,legal instructional materials and other written materials as requested by the TeamLeader.
  • Assist the supervisor or Team Leader in preparing statistical reports.
  • Perform other duties as designated by the Team Leader.


Minimum qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate (JD), Florida Bar licensed and in good standing with the Bar.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant attorney work experience within at least one of thefollowing practice areas: housing, family law, landlord/tenant matters, or other litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, organize, accept major responsibility andreview work of others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent prioritization skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with legal database systems to document case assignments.
  • Sympathetic and compassionate understanding of the social, economic, and legal issuesfaced by low-income individuals and the elderly with limited access to such services.
  • Ability to relate well and effectively with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with other team members
  • Ability to travel to counties within the service area to meet with clients, perform outreach, and make presentations


Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in public interest law.


Compensation:

  • Starting salary $53,000.00/yr. (increases based upon relevant experience)
  • Excellent benefits including annual and sick leave, reimbursement for mileage, continuing education and professional licensure renewal paid.
