About the Position

The Buried Alive Project is seeking Senior Counsel to join our team. The attorney will provide full scale, post-conviction legal representation to clients serving unjust sentences for various federal drug offenses. The attorney will advocate for our clients’ freedom and help catalyze impactful change.

 

Job duties will include:

  • Pre-litigation analysis and advocacy, including evaluating and screening cases for potential post-conviction sentencing relief  
  • Litigate on behalf of clients in federal court including preparing sentence reduction pleadings, motions, and briefs
  • Train and supervise pro bono attorneys and law students to improve access to justice
  • Participate in public education on federal drug law sentencing issues  in the form of speaking engagements and published writings

Experience & Qualifications

The ideal applicant is passionate about transforming our nation’s criminal justice system. Specific qualifications we are looking for include:

 

  • J.D. and admitted to practice law in a U.S. state and at least one federal district court.
  • Minimum 3 years of federal criminal defense experience. Must have experience with federal drug cases.
  • Excellent writing and legal research skills and ability to engage in complex legal analysis, and develop and implement strategic litigation as part of a creative response to the First Step Act and any other change in the law or sentencing guidelines.
  • Highly motivated and hard working with proven ability to take initiative, establish priorities, work independently and in a collaborative environment, and proceed with objectives with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with colleges, pro bono law firms and corporate legal departments, and social justice organizations.
  • Innovative thinking, a strong work ethic, and deep commitment to transforming the criminal legal system are essential.
