Reed Smith Adds Two

Reed Smith has added two partners to its corporate and securities group in New York. Michael Smith, whose practice focuses on corporate and securities law with regards to international financing moved from Patton Boggs. Kenneth Regensburg, who moved from White & Case, has a practice focused on M&A, public capital markets, private equity, and venture capital.

Founded in 1877, Reed Smith LLP employs 1500 attorneys in 23 cities worldwide. The firm counsels 28 of the top 30 US banks, and 10 of the world’s 12 largest pharmaceutical companies. In addition to the United States, Reed Smith has offices in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Schulte Roth Picks up 5 from Mayer Brown

Five securities litigation lawyers started working at Schulte Roth in Washington today after leaving Mayer Brown. The team is led by Richard Morvillo, who had been the chair of Mayer Brown’s securities enforcement practice group. Peter White and Pat Conti are also joining as partners, while Jeffrey Robertson and William Mann join as of counsel.

Washington DC is Schulte Roth’s first domestic expansion (the firm also opened an office in London in 2002). It was founded in New York in 1969 and there are over 450 attorneys working out of the three offices.

Greenberg Traurig Adds 3

Arthur Don and Nancy Schimmel have joined Greeberg Traurig as partners in the firm’s Chicago office. Don and Schimmel are both part of the coporate and securities practice group. In Atlanta, Cindy J.K. Davis is a new partner in the financial institutions and business reorganization & bankruptcy practices.

Arthur Don comes to Greeberg from Seyfarth Shaw where he was a partner for more than 30 years. Over that time he has built a large investment management practice and has experience in a broad array of corporate and securities law.

Nancy Schimmel was most recently a partner at Latham & Watkins. Her experience covers the negotiation and documentation of trade, health care, loan and lease receivables securitizations and structured financings.

Cindy Davis, who comes to Greenberg from Paul Hastings, has a financial restructuring practices. She specializes in complex credit transactions involving multi-currency facilities and cross-border lending arrangements.

Greenberg Traurig is expanding its investment management practice and anticipates this trio of partners will increase the firms ability to advise clients on complex corporate transactions.

Skadden to do early summer offers, en masse

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, LLP, has announced its intent to make all of its offers to law students for summer of 2010 on September 22nd of this year. This goes against the grain of many other law firms, who have been holding off making staffing decisions until later in the year when they can better assess their needs.

Foley & Lardner Hires 3 More Lawyers

Foley & Lardner, which announced three hires earlier this month, has brought on three more lawyers in New York.

Barry Mandel joins from Merrill Lynch as a partner in securities enforcement & litigation and white-collar defense. He was co-head of global litigation, employment, and regulatory affairs at the global financial services firm.

Howard Margulis and Ellen Wolchek, both from Troutman Sanders, join Foley’s finance practice and energy industry team. Margulis joins as partner, and Wolchek as senior counsel.

Foley & Lardner LLP is an international general practice law firm started in 1842 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It employs 1,000 attorneys, and is the 24th largest firm in the United States.

Morris, Manning & Martin Expands into Beijing

Atlanta-based Morris, Manning & Martin, which last month fired incoming associates, is launching a new office in Beijing, China.

The firm just opened an office in Taiwan.

Morris’ Asian offices will deal with patent prosecution and potential litigation, as well as corporate and securities matters.

Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP, is 175-lawyer firm with offices in Atlanta, Alpharetta, Duluth and Savannah, Georgia; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Washington DC; Beijing and Taipei.

Berman DeValerio Seeking Associates

Berman DeValerio’s San Francisco office seeks to add two junior or senior associates to the 10-lawyer office.

The associates should have experience in antitrust or securities litigation.

The firm was recently appointed co-lead counsel in a Bear Stearns securities class action.

Berman DeValerio prosecutes class actions nationwide on behalf of individuals and institutions, chiefly victims of securities fraud and antitrust law violations. Founded in 1982, the firm now includes 33 lawyers in Boston, San Francisco and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Greenberg Traurig Austin Adds Securities Team

Miami’s Greenberg Traurig has announced the addition of top securities litigation attorneys Paul R. Bessette, Michael J. Biles and Jesse Z. Weiss.

Bessette joins as a national co-chair, and Biles and Weiss join as shareholders in the Securities Litigation Practice. All three join from the Securities Litigation Group at Akin Gump, where Bessette headed that group.

Bessette has served as lead defense counsel in over 60 securities class actions, derivative actions and SEC investigations across the country.

Biles concentrates on securities litigation in federal and state courts, representing public companies, officers, directors and securities underwriters in securities class actions and derivative lawsuits.

Weiss’ practice focuses on securities litigation matters in federal and state courts, including securities class actions, derivative suits, M&A litigation, internal investigations and regulatory enforcement actions.

Also joining Greenberg Traurig’s Securities Litigation practice from Akin Gump are various associates who specialize in securities litigation.

Greenberg Traurig’s Austin office opened in August 2008 as the firm’s third office in Texas.

Nixon Peabody Hires China Practice Chair

Nixon Peabody has recruited as its China practice chair a former general counsel of the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

Henry Liu, who will be based in Nixon Peabody’s Manhattan office and travel frequently to China, served as the CSRC’s top lawyer from 1995 to 2000. He was instrumental in drafting China’s first national securities law in 1998.

Liu was most recently of counsel at now-defunct Heller Ehrman, which he joined in 2006. During his time at Heller, he also was a managing director of HankPacific Group, a banking and advisory firm focusing on China. Liu has also done investment banking stints at the former Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, which was absorbed by Credit Suisse.

Rochester, New York’s Nixon Peabody opened a Shanghai office in March 2008.
