The scholarships will cover all three years of law school for the Class of 2014. They are funded by private donations, which includes a gift from Mark P. Robinson Jr., chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council and senior partner at Robinson, Calcagnie & Robinson Inc. in Newport Beach, Calif.

“Because of the generosity of Mark Robinson and others, UCI Law will continue to provide generous scholarships to help us attract top-quality students,” said Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. “These scholarships will also help reduce the debt burdens of our students by the time they are ready to pursue careers in law and public service.”

UCI Law, the first new public law school in California in more than 40 years, aims to enroll about 100 students in its next class, which will be the third since the school opened in August 2009. Tuition at UC law schools in the fall of 2011 is expected to be about $40,000 for in-state students and $50,000 for those out of state.

The first two classes of UCI Law students also received scholarship support from private donations: The first received full-tuition scholarships, the second, half-tuition. Those classes had median grades and LSAT scores on par with classes at top 20 law schools, UC Irvine said in a press release.

The first two classes numbered 60 and 83 students. The school will increase the size of its classes gradually until they reach about 200 students.

Other types of financial aid, including guaranteed federal loans and loan forgiveness programs, will also be available to help cover tuition costs and other expenses.

UC Irvine, School of Law announced on Monday that next year’s incoming class will, for all three years, receive a scholarship worth fifty percent of their tuition. Funded by private donations, these scholarships will be given to students arriving in August 2010.

The offering of generous scholarships for the second class follows upon last year’s privately funded scholarships that granted the school’s Inaugural Class full-tuition for all three years. The Dean of the Law School, Erwin Chemerinsky, believes that these scholarships in combination with competitive admissions requirements will put the school in the top twenty as well as maintain a high caliber of student body. UC Irvine School of Law accepted only 4 percent of applicants for its Inaugural Class, which was the lowest acceptance rate in the country.

Tuition to the Law School for the second class is expected to be about $40,000 for in-state students and $50,000 for those out of state. While students are guaranteed on-campus housing, they will be responsible for their own housing and living expenses. Students who have difficulty paying the remainder of the tuition are able to receive other types of financial aid in the form of federal loans.

Now a law school had jumped on the bandwagon.

The University of Miami School of Law is asking incoming 1L students invited to start in the Fall to defer their entry into the law school until Fall 2010.

Students who accept the offer will get a $5000 Public Interest Deferral Scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year, if they complete 120 hours of public service by June 2010. This is in addition to any other scholarship money.

Deferred students will also have a greater chance of receiving a $75,000 Miami Scholars Scholarship award; and will be first considered for all 2010 scholarships.

Most students receiving financial aid from Harvard Law School are required to work for 10 weeks over the summer, the traditional length of a major law firm summer program. But this year, many students have seen their summer jobs reduced, or cut entirely, by law firms.

Initially, the school said these students would still need to complete these work weeks, or risk losing their financial aid; although students who could not find work could appeal at the end of the summer.

But now the school has officially reduced the period of required work to eight weeks. The school initially resisted, unsure it could afford the change.

But after learning how many students were impacted by summer job reductions, Harvard Law reduced the requirement.

Harvard Law School is one of the professional graduate schools of Harvard University. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it is the United States’ oldest law school in continuous operation. It is home to the largest academic law library in the world. HLS is typically ranked in the top three law schools in the nation, and is currently listed as the second best law school in the United States by US News and World Report, behind only Yale Law School.

A new law school is opening at the University of California Irvine next fall. And it’s waiving tuition for three years to lure top applicants:

The financial carrot is part of an ambitious strategy by Erwin Chemerinsky, a renowned constitutional law scholar and dean of the new school… to attract Ivy League-caliber students to the first public university law school in the state in 40 years.

Scholarship winners will be chosen for their potential to emerge three years later as legal stars on the ascendance. Only the best and brightest need apply, but the school hopes to offer full scholarships to all 60 members of its inaugural class in 2009. Subsequent classes will be on a normal tuition basis.

“Our goal is to be a top 20 law school from the first time we are ranked,” Chemerinsky said. The school hopes to enroll 600 students and employ 40 to 50 professors.

The new school has already seen its first scandal, as dean Chemerinsky was hired away from Duke University, but then fired for his liberal politics. Protests led UC Irvine to rehire Chemerinsky.
