Polsinelli Shughart PC Announces Plans to Acquire Hendren Andrae LLC

The Kansas City, Missouri based law firm Polsinelli Shughart PC announced on Tuesday its plans to acquire Hendren Andrae LLC, a seven-lawyer law firm in Jefferson City.

The merger, set to occur by April 1, will be Polsinelli’s second merger in just over a year.

In the March 15 article in the St. Louis Business Journal, Polsinelli Chairman Russell Welsh was quoted as saying: “These are established lawyers and it is always good to have lawyers with existing relationships and long-standing relationships to start the office.”

In the same article, Mike Dallmeyer, managing partner of what will be Polsinelli’s Jefferson City office was quoted as saying: “A number of urban firms have opened offices here in Jefferson City and, as a result, there’s less referral of business from those firms that used to come to Hendren Andrae,” said

Polsinelli Shughart PC is one of the top 100 law firms in the country, with more than 470 attorneys in 13 cities stretching from Washington, D.C. to Phoenix.

Founded in 1946, Hendren Andrae’s practice focuses on government relations in Missouri’s capital.

Kansas City law firm Polsinelli Shughart, the result of a merger last month, has laid off nine attorneys and 16 staff members.

Chairman Russell Welsh said the layoffs were from various practices, and were both “economy related” and the result of redundancies due to the merger.

Four of the lawyers laid off were the firm’s Kansas City HQ.

Polsinelli Shughart PC is the result of a merger between Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus and Shughart Thomson & Kilroy. The firms had combined revenue of about $174 million in 2008. Polsinelli ranked fifth and Shughart sixth on the Kansas City Business Journal’s most recent list of the top area law firms.

Last week we reported that former Republican Missouri US Representative Kenny Hulshof was joining the law firm that will emerge from the pending merger of Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus and Shughart Thomson & Kilroy.

Today, that merger is final.

The new firm, Polsinelli Shughart PC, came into existence Sunday. The move creates a firm with nearly 500 lawyers in several cities, effectively becoming one of Kansas City’s biggest law firms.

The firms had combined revenue of about $174 million in 2008. Polsinelli ranked fifth and Shughart sixth on the Kansas City Business Journal’s most recent list of the top area law firms.

The Polsinelli firm was known for work in real estate, financial services and life sciences practices, and Shughart was noted for its work in business litigation, health care and construction law.

Polsinelli Chairman and CEO Russell Welsh holds those titles with the combined firm, and Shughart CEO Jack Kilroy Jr. becomes vice president.

Shughart litigator Larry Ward is the combined firm’s chairman emeritus.
