Ogier Lays Off 17 Employees

Ogier, a leading global offshore law firm, is laying off 17 people at its law office in the Bailiwick of Jersey.

Appleby Brings on New Hires

Bermuda’s Appleby has brought on new hires for its Funds & Investment Services division.

Tanya Kozak joins in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands from Toronto, Canada’s Borden Ladner Gervais. She advises clients on the establishment of investment funds, exempted limited partnerships and corporate governance. She obtained her LL.B from the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law, in 2000.

Jessica Wormald also joins in the Caymans, with experience in funds work and formation of stand alone vehicles including segregated portfolio companies and limited partnerships. She also specializes in the formation, establishment and listing of mutual funds and hedge funds.

Appleby, previously Appleby Spurling Hunter, is an offshore legal, fiduciary and administration service provider, created by the merger of Bermuda’s Appleby Spurling Kemp and the Cayman Islands’ Hunter & Hunter in 2004, and a subsequent merger with Jersey, UK’s Bailhache Labesse in 2006.

It has offices in the key offshore locations of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Jersey, Mauritius and the Seychelles, as well as London, Hong Kong and Zurich. It plans to open an office in Dubai.

Appleby Hiring for Office in the Seychelles

Bermuda’s Appleby Global, which just announced a merger with the Isle of Man’s Dickinson Cruickshank, is opening an office in the Seychelles. It will be the only offshore firm operating there.

The office in Victoria will managed by partner-in-charge of the firm’s Mauritius office, Malcolm Moller. Appleby opened the office in Mauritius in February 2007.

Appleby has also hired Conrad Benoiton, chairman of the Seychelles International Business Authority, to be the managing director of its corporate practice in Victoria.

The firm seeks to expand the new office, but need lawyers with experience in British law.

The Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago nation of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, 930 miles east of mainland Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar.

Appleby Merging with Dickinson Cruickshank

Bermuda’s Appleby Global will merge with the Isle of Man’s Dickinson Cruickshank.

The legal, fiduciary and administration service firm will continue to be known as Appleby, and the merger will be effective in October.

Appleby will have 200 lawyers, including 73 partners, and more than 800 staff in nine offices worldwide, including Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Jersey, Mauritius, Hong Kong, London, Zurich and the Isle of Man.

Founded in 1899, Dickinson Cruickshank is one of the longest-established law firms on the self-governing UK Crown dependency of the Isle of Man. It has 11 partners, 27 other lawyers, 17 fiduciary service providers and a total staff of 119.

It has offices in the key offshore locations of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Jersey and Mauritius, as well as London, Hong Kong and Zurich. It plans to open an office in Dubai.

Conyers Dill & Pearman Expands Island Practices

Conyers Dill & Pearman, which just announced it is opening an office in Brazil, has hired three associates for its Bermuda and British Virgin Islands practices.

Elizabeth Denman joins from Mello Jones & Martin; Callum Harper joins from Ashurst. Both are based in Bermuda.

Anton Goldstein joins from Sullivan & Cromwell, and will be based in the British Virgin Islands.

Established in 1928, Conyers Dill & Pearman has over 550 staff and 150 lawyers at offices in Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman & Mauritius Islands, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Moscow, Singapore and now São Paulo.
