Troutman Sanders Announces New Managing Partner

Troutman Sanders LLP, a leading international law firm with over 650 lawyers and 16 offices worldwide, named Stephen E. Lewis, the firm’s former corporate section chief, to be the new Managing Partner as of January 1, 2011. Lewis replaced Robert W. Webb Jr. who served as the firm’s Managing Partner for over 17 years. Webb remains at Troutman Sanders as the firms’ chairman.

Lewis expressed his excitement over his new role in Troutman Sanders. “I’m excited to be working closely with Bob Webb and the rest of the Troutman Sanders management team as we look for ways to grow our practice areas and offices in a manner designed to better serve our clients. Lewis has been with the firm since 1991. He became a partner in 1999 and elected to the firm’s executive committee in 2003. His areas of practice includes mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and general business matters. Lewis received numerous legal honors throughout his career. He has been recognized among the top lawyers by the Legal Elite magazine and the Atlanta Magazine and Law & Politics. Lewis is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina where he earned both his undergraduate and law degrees.

Brownstein Announces its New CEO

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP, a respected national law firm based in Denver, Colorado with over 250 lawyers, announced that Blane Prescott, the former Senior Vice President and Managing Director at Hildebrandt Baker Robbins, is the new Chief Operating Officer of the firm beginning December 2010. Prescott will assist in developing and executing business and marketing strategies while overseeing the overall operation of the firm. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton Elects New Managing Partner

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP has elected a new managing partner to lead their firm. Cleary, a leading international law firm for the past 60 years, elected Mark Leddy, an antitrust partner based in Washington DC, to replace Mark Walker in the managing partner post beginning in January 2011. Walker has been the managing partner since 2005. Under Walker’s term, the firm has successfully expanded in Asia, acquired an office in Beijing, launched a Hong Kong practice and is now preparing to enter the Brazilian market.

Leddy, who joined the firm as a partner in 1986 after 14 years in the US Department of Justice, said that he is committed to carrying on the outstanding work done by Walker. “I will continue Mark Walker’s strategy of thoughtful expansion, while at the same time maintaining our one-firm structure and our strong tradition of legal excellence, innovation and internationalism.” Leddy also expressed his admiration for the outgoing managing partner. “By any measure, Mark Walker has been an outstanding managing partner and leader. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP has about 1,100 lawyers spread across 12 offices. In 2009, the firm registered $965 gross revenue, a 27% increase from its 2008 revenue.

Burleson Cooke Adds Nine Attorneys to Pittsburgh Office

The energy law firm of Burleson Cooke has added nine attorneys to its Pittsburgh office, and named Kevin Colosimo as Managing Partner.

The move broadens the firm’s services and capabilities for companies in the Marcellus Shale - what could be one of the USA’s most promising natural gas resources in the Appalachian Basin.

Duane Morris Picks New Head of Corporate Practice

Drawing from its Baltimore office, Philadelphia based law firm Duane Morris has tapped partner George J. Nemphos to head its corporate practice, says the Philadelphia Business Journal. Mr. Nemphos left his former firm, DLA Piper, in 2006 in order to manage the newly opened Duane Morris Baltimore office.

Pepper Hamilton Partner Buys the Texas Rangers

Chuck Greenberg, a partner at Pepper Hamilton whose practice has focused on sports related transactions, will become the new managing partner and CEO of the Texas Rangers once MLB approves the transaction. Greenberg, who already owns three minor league teams, leads a team of investors that agreed to buy the team along with associated properties for over $500 million. The exact terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed until the league has a chance to weigh in on the deal, but Greenberg has every reason to be confident since he is represented in negotiations with the commissioners office by Foley & Lardner’s Mary Braza, the long time outside counsel for the league and commissioner Bud Selig.

One of the investors on Greenberg’s team is legendary Ranger’s pitcher and strike out king, Nolan Ryan. Ryan will continue in his current role as team president.

New Leadership at Skadden Arps Chicago Office

Wayne Whalen has stepped down as head of Skadden‘s Chicago office. Whalen has been with Skadden since leaving Mayer Brown in 1984 to help set up the Chicago office, which quickly became the busiest office in the Skadden network. His hand picked successor, Brian Duwe, was still three year away from his degree at the University of Chicago Law School when Whalen joined Skadden.

Whalen plans to maintain his existing corporate practice but said the time was right to pass the torch after 25 years.
