Former Michigan Chief Justice Joins Miller Canfield

Clifford W. Taylor, former chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, is joining Miller Canfield Feb. 15 as of counsel in the appellate section of the firm’s litigation and trial group. He will work out of Miller Canfield’s offices in Lansing, Mich. and Naples, Fla.

Taylor brings 16 years of judicial experience to the role. He was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals in 1992 and elected later that year. In 1997 he was appointed by former Gov. John Engler to the Michigan Supreme Court. He served as chief justice from 2005-09.

“Justice Taylor will be a valuable resource for clients,” said Michael Coakley, head of Miller Canfield’s litigation and trial group. “From his years of experience on the appellate bench, he knows first-hand what works and what does not in pursuing and presenting an appeal.”

Taylor will appear on behalf of amici curiae on appeals involving federal and state constitutional, statutory and public policy matters. He will also serve as an arbitrator and mediator.

Miller Canfield has more than 370 lawyers with offices in Michigan, Illinois, Florida, New York, Ohio, Canada, Mexico, Poland and China.

McDonald Hopkins Continues Expansion in Chicago

Charles F. MacKelvie has joined the Chicago office of McDonald Hopkins as a member in its healthcare and healthcare restructuring process. MacKelvie was most recently a principal at Miller Canfield.

MacKelvie has argued more than 300 cases before the U.S. Department of Health in his more than 30 years as a healthcare and business attorney, according to a press release. He is the latest addition to the expanding McDonald Hopkins’ office in Chicago. The firm recently relocated to 300 North La Salle to accommodate the firm’s continuing growth.

McDonald Hopkins is a business advisory and advocacy law firm with offices in Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, and West Palm Beach.

Stephanie Heilborn joins Fulbright & Jaworski in New York as a partner in its trusts and estates practice. Most recently she was a solo practitioner as Heilborn LLC; and she was an associate at Milbank. Heilborn received her AB cum laude from Harvard University, her M.Sc from The London School of Economics, and her JD from Georgetown University Law Center.

Former Florida assistant attorney general William Haselden joins KamberEdelson as a partner in Tallahassee, to found the firm’s new office there. As an assistant AG he was Section Chief of the CyberFraud Section, which he helped found.

Robert Morad joins Miller Canfield as senior counsel in the Troy, Michigan office. He was previously assistant prosecuting attorney for Oakland County, Michigan, and assistant state attorney for Palm Beach County, Florida. At Miller Canfield he will specialize in criminal and civil defense and litigation. Morad received his JD from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.

Tipster: Miller Canfield Lays Off 16 Lawyers, 9 Staff [Update]

A JDJournal tipster informs us that the Detroit headquarters of Miller Canfield has let go 25 people, which includes approximately 16 lawyers, including partners.

The cuts targeted a group that did work for Chrysler.

Another tipster says: “I was one of three paralegals and three staff members laid off or asked to retire from Miller Canfield’s Chrysler Group on or about December 1, 2008. To the best of my knowledge, the rest were laid off last week.”

Miller Canfield Opens New Mexico Office — That Is, a New Office in Mexico

Miller Canfield announced it is launching an office in Monterrey, Mexico, which is that nation’s automotive manufacturing and business center.

The office will focus on mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate and commercial transactions, labor & employment, tax, litigation and intellectual property law.

The Miller Canfield Mexico Practice Team is led by Alberto J. Murga, Otto H. Sampogna and Michele M. Compton. The team will be supported in the US by a team of lawyers with expertise in Mexican and international transactions and disputes, led by Richard A. Walawender.
