Southeast Michigan Firms Log Thousands of Non Billable Hours Over Health Care Reform

According to the April 4 Crain’s Detroit Business article, many Southeast Michigan law firms are putting together teams of lawyers to thoroughly study the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Enacted last month, the health care reform legislation is approximately 2,600 pages long.

None of the thousands of hours the firms have put, and will put, into research, developing internal business strategies and briefings for trade groups of affected businesses, preparing for seminars and the like to educate themselves and others, are billable to clients.

Examples of firms preparing to tackle the legislation include Detroit based Butzel Long, P.C. and Grand Rapids based Warner Norcross & Judd L.L.P. Both recently assigned teams to study various provisions of the bill.

Mark Wilson, health care section leader at Detroit-based Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone P.L.C., also estimates health care reform accounts for 1,000 hours or so of attorney research and client calls at the firm, which has assembled a task force of 10 attorneys to research the new law.

“For right now a lot of what we’d call our R&D work on the bill just becomes part of the overhead cost of running a law firm,” said Wilson.

Miller Canfield Lays Off 13 More Lawyers

Detroit’s Miller Canfield, which according to tipsters laid off 25 people last Monday, has let go another 13 attorneys this Monday, according to press reports.

The layoffs affected various offices and practice groups. The firm employs 380 attorneys.

Miller Canfield Opens Toronto Office

Miller Canfield has established an office in Toronto, Ontario.

The new office was formed through a merger with the 10-lawyer Toronto firm of Gaertner Tobin, run by name partners Dennis Tobin and Arie Gaertner. Miller Canfield also employs 25 attorneys in Windsor, Ontario, on the US border.

Last week, the firm held an event celebrating the merger, feting 200 clients.

This week, the Detroit headquarters of Miller Canfield let go 25 people, including 16 lawyers.

A JDJournal tipster informs us that the Detroit headquarters of Miller Canfield has let go 25 people, which includes approximately 16 lawyers, including partners.

The cuts targeted a group that did work for Chrysler.

Miller Canfield announced it is launching an office in Monterrey, Mexico, which is that nation’s automotive manufacturing and business center.

The office will focus on mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate and commercial transactions, labor & employment, tax, litigation and intellectual property law.

The Miller Canfield Mexico Practice Team is led by Alberto J. Murga, Otto H. Sampogna and Michele M. Compton. The team will be supported in the US by a team of lawyers with expertise in Mexican and international transactions and disputes, led by Richard A. Walawender.
