Today is Tuesday, January 26, and here’s your morning roundup…

A Pepper Hamilton Partner is the lead investor in a deal to purchase the Texas Rangers…

Wilmer Hale’s numbers are out and per partner profits are up seven percent (guess they don’t mind that story leaking to blawgs) …

Wilson Sonsini is thawing salaries and paying bonuses…

And so is Hughes Hubbard…

NBC has triumphed over Conan when it comes to the IP rights of various characters from his show…

Chadbourne & Parke has a new IP partner…

It wouldn’t be a new year without a list of predictions, and seeing as how it’s almost the end of January, we thought we’d better find one…

Crowell & Moring snags one for its international arbitration practice…

Cozen O’Connor adds one in anti trust…

MLA gets a big contract from the government of Bermuda…

Our condolences go out to friends and family of Baker Hostetler partner John Mings…

Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis are redesigning their interfaces in reaction to competition from free search engines like google…

Drinker Biddle picks up one in New York…

A former McGuireWoods partner and former aide to NC Governor Mike Easley is facing corruption charges…

It’s Thursday, October 29th and here in Las Vegas it feels like winter has already arrived. As I write this, my house is being buffeted by gusts of wind up to 50mph.

Here’s a quick look back at yesterday’s stories…

Foley & Lardner has struck a deal with the NIH…

McGuire Woods gets around to making some of its offers to its summer class…

Ropes & Gray adds another attorney to its new office in London…

A beauraucratic snafu may cost Pepsi $1.2 billion…

and our condolences go out to the family and friends of Texas lawyer Sidney Davis, who died this week from complications due to the swine flu…

Also of note – several sites yesterday were carrying stories about a possible merger between Hogan & Harston and the UK firm Lovells. We reported on this story a few weeks ago, and there isn’t really anything new to report yet. For our original story, look here. We will of course bring you any updates as they arise.

Well that’s what McGuireWoodsis doing this week. Long after most firms have broken the bad news for the year, McGuireWoods is making some offers to its summer class. Those that don’t receive offers in this wave, take heart – you’re on a waiting list and could receive offers later. It could be worse, you could be on your second deferral!

In other McGuireWoods news… Timothy Heaphy, a partner from the Washington DC office, was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate last night as the new U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia.

McGuire Woods is a 900-lawyer firm that has offices in 15 US cities including New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago. It has existing international offices in Brussels and Almaty.

Many law firms are using the economic meltdown as an excuse to end seniority-based pay for associates, adopting “merit-based” systems similar to those used outside the legal profession.

Examples in the US include Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, Shearman & Sterling and WolfBlock.

Firms are also cutting salaries for starting associates, just two years after top firms raised pay to compete for talent.

“In the current economic crisis, we see the final demise of the Medieval guild in the American legal profession,” consultant Joel Henning tells Bloomberg.

Orrick will introduce new tiers of associates, replacing the traditional single-track system where some become partners who share in the firm’s profits after about eight years. Under the new structure, associates will be able to stay at the firm permanently, drawing salaries; and will not have to leave the firm if they are unwilling to work long hours.

Clients typically pay much less for work done by a law firm associate than that performed by a partner.

Howrey introduced a similar plan in January, and McGuireWoods started one two years ago.
