Baker Botts, a leader in the IP practice area in the United States, announced in recent days that Neil Coulson has joined the firm’s London office as special counsel in the IP practice.

Coulson has an established intellectual property practice which covers all aspects of IP dispute resolution and the exploitation of IP rights.

The addition of Coulson reflects the firm’s continuing international expansion of its IP practice. In 2010, Baker Botts added IP capabilities in its Moscow office by hiring Russian lawyer Ekaterina Tilling to manage a growing group of intellectual property lawyers in that office.

Baker Botts IP Department Chair Bart Showalter was quoted as saying in a press release at the firm’s website: “Neil’s practice is a perfect fit for us, not only in London but across all our offices. Client requests for strong legal counsel on complex IP issues in Europe and other international venues match Neil’s extensive experience in this key practice area.”

Coulson has provided counsel for clients in a broad range of industry sectors and technologies, including oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, industrial machinery and heavy engineering, agrochemicals, electronics, IT/software and environmental engineering. He has also represented clients in the Patent Court and the Court of Appeal, and in matters before the U.K. and European Patent offices.

Tony Higginson, Partner in Charge of the firm’s London office was quoted as saying: “During the past few months, we have added lawyers in London who are well-versed in major practice areas where there is increased client demand for our services. Neil follows our recent hiring of Neil Foster and the return of Mark Rowley, and we will continue to strengthen our team here to meet clients’ needs.”

Coulson was employed by Jones Day in London prior to joining Baker Botts. He was recommended for patent litigation in Chambers UK and Legal 500.

Coulson is a graduate of St. Peter’s College, Oxford University, and he received a diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Bristol University and diplomas in Legal Practice (with commendation) and Law from the College of Law. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, the Institute of Trademark Attorneys and the International Trademark Association.

Bart Showalter’s practice includes all aspects of intellectual property law, with a special emphasis on patent litigation, procurement and licensing in the electronics, telecommunications and software fields. He provides strategic counsel to clients in a wide variety of areas, including those developing innovative computer software, semiconductor devices, optical systems, and data networks. He has litigated patent infringement cases involving landline and cellular telecommunications technology, video conferencing, interactive television, voice messaging and a number of other fields. He also provides general counseling on intellectual property issues.

International law firm Baker Botts has more than 725 lawyers and a network of 13 offices around the world. The firm is recognized as a leader in the energy, technology and life sciences sectors. Throughout the firm’s 170-year history, it has provided creative and effective legal solutions for clients while demonstrating an unrelenting commitment to excellence.

Perkins Coie Foreign Legal Affairs Attorneys at Law announced it has opened a new office in Taipei, Taiwan.

The announcement, which came in recent days, will serve to broaden Perkins Coie’s Asia practice, as well as to better serve its Taiwan-based clients, especially in patent litigation and other intellectual property matters.

Jonathan James, firm wide Patent Litigation practice co-chair was quoted as saying in a press release at the firm’s website: “We are excited to open this office in Taipei to be able to better serve the needs of our Taiwanese technology clients. The attorneys at Perkins Coie have been actively representing Taiwanese companies for more than a decade in many high profile patent cases. As our commitment to these clients expands and our relationships deepen, it is a natural and welcome step that Perkins opens an office in Taipei.”

James, a partner in the firm’s Phoenix office, concentrates his practice on patent, intellectual property and other commercial litigation for technology companies. He has represented clients, including Intel and HTC, in patent cases all over the United States. As well, he frequently counsels clients about patent enforcement and licensing issues and has extensive experience advising clients about, negotiating with and litigating against “non-practicing entities.”

James also assists U.S. technology companies in intellectual property infringement and licensing/unfair competition litigation matters in China. He possesses considerable experience and knowledge about China’s intellectual property, licensing and competition laws and about civil litigation in the Chinese courts. As such, he has worked closely with Chinese counsel in these matters and travels to China frequently.

Perkins Coie’s Taiwanese-based clients include HTC, ASUSTeK, ATEN International, Elitegroup Computer Systems, Largan Precision, Princo, Lite-On Group and Monolithic Power Systems. The firm secured an important patent litigation victory recently for HTC before the U.S. International Trade Commission in a case filed against it and others by FlashPoint Technologies.

Perkins Coie has over 175 attorneys involved in patent litigation, prosecution and licensing, with more than 100 of those attorneys having science degrees, including degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and in numerous life sciences disciplines. The firm regularly represents leading technology and life sciences companies in patent litigation in federal courts throughout the United States and before the International Trade Commission.

The firm was the recipient of significant recognition for its intellectual property practice, including top ten rankings in the 2011 Top Law Firms for Patent Quality by Information Technology and the 2011 Top 20 All Industries list by Intellectual Asset Management magazine and Ocean Tomo. In addition, the firm and its attorneys are recognized in numerous IP rankings, including Chambers USA and Best Lawyers.

The Taipei office is Perkins Coie’s third office in Asia. The firm’s other Asia offices, in Beijing and Shanghai, represent Chinese and multinational companies in intellectual property matters in the areas of technology and life sciences, corporate finance and securities, international business and personal planning.

With more than 800 lawyers in 19 offices across the United States, China and Taiwan, Perkins Coie serves great companies ranging in size from start-ups to FORTUNE 100 corporations.

The law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP recently announced that Chad Everingham, a former U.S. magistrate judge, joined as a partner in its intellectual property practice in the firm’s newly established office in Longview, Texas. In this role, he will advise clients on a variety of intellectual property litigation matters, focusing on patent litigation.

Along with the addition of Everingham is David M. Stein, who joined the firm’s intellectual property practice in the firm’s Los Angeles office.

Everingham has legal experience in both public service and private practice. For four years, he served as a magistrate judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas; this is one of the busiest patent litigation courts in the federal system.

Formerly, Stein was a partner at a large international law firm. There, he served as the chief operating officer of its East Texas practice group. He has significant experience litigating patent cases in jurisdictions all over the country.

Steven Zager, head of Akin Gump’s firm wide intellectual property practice was quoted as saying in a press release at the firm’s website: “The addition of these talented attorneys who have such a deep and impressive set of patent litigation skills is a tremendous addition to our team. Chad literally helped write the book on patent litigation in one of the country’s IP litigation hotspots. Both have intimate familiarity with, and knowledge of, patent litigation that will be a boon not only for our clients, but also for our entire team.”

Everingham was quoted as saying: “These are exciting times for me. Akin Gump enjoys an international reputation for excellence in the handling of complex intellectual property matters. I am delighted to team up with such an experienced complement of trial lawyers. The chance to join one of the country’s top IP litigation practices was a tremendous opportunity that I could not pass up. I’m looking forward to establishing my practice at Akin Gump and bringing over a decade of experience in patent law to bear on behalf of the firm’s clients.”

During his service on the bench, Everingham handled nearly 80 Markman proceedings and tried over twenty complex patent cases. He presided, with the consent of all parties, over more than 200 civil cases, many of which were intellectual property disputes involving industries including medical devices, computer hardware and software, recreational equipment, advanced electronics and semiconductors, automotive and telecommunications. Everingham made significant contributions to the measures designed to facilitate the disposition of complex cases, regarding docket control, discovery and protective order measures.

Stein has been involved in major patent cases involving semiconductor devices and processing, medical devices, sporting goods and various business methods. He has also tried many cases in jurisdictions all over the country. Ranked by The Legal 500 United States (2010) as a leading patent litigation lawyer in the hi-tech, electronics and IT sectors, Stein has also handled many pro bono matters.

Stein was quoted as saying: “Akin Gump has long been a recognized leader in the intellectual property space, and it’s exciting to join its team of accomplished lawyers. I’m very much looking forward to the opportunities this move will present to our clients.”

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP has over 800 lawyers in the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and was founded in 1945.

Law firm Jones Day announced recently that both Martha Gooding and Michael Stimson have joined as partners in its Intellectual Property Practice, in the Irvine Office.

Both join from Howrey, where they were members of the firm’s IP Group.

Joe Sims, the Jones Day partner responsible for coordinating the Firm’s activities in California was quoted as saying in a press release at the firm’s website: “Martha and Michael are experienced IP litigators who provide even deeper strength for our firm in the California region. Together with the addition earlier this year of Bill Rooklidge and Frank Cote as IP partners in Irvine – both of whom were formerly partners in Howrey’s Irvine office – Jones Day now has 64 attorneys in our IP Practice in California and 266 attorneys in the group worldwide. This is one of the largest and most experienced, full-service global IP practice groups at any law firm in the world.”

Martha Gooding has nearly 30 years of experience representing clients in a wide range of complex disputes, including patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation litigation. An experienced litigator, she has tried cases in federal and state courts. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the California Bar Foundation, she formerly served as President of both the Federal Bar Association of Orange County and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers of Orange County. She is also a former member of the ABA House of Delegates, and a former co-chair of the Federal Practice Task Force of the ABA Litigation Section.

The numerous awards she has received include being named a Southern California Super Lawyer, being selected for the Daily Journal’s Top Women Litigators list and the Best Lawyers in America list, and receiving the 2009 ADL Marcus Kaufman Jurisprudence Award. She received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.

Michael Stimson, Ph.D., focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and appeals and reexaminations, appeals, and patent interference proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His litigation experience includes trade secret and patent trials and arbitrations, and appellate experience including appeals to the Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and Ninth Circuit. Stimson has been the successful leader of several high stakes intellectual property litigation teams. He has handled cases regarding a broad range of technologies including hard disk drives, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, polymer chemistry, cement chemistry, and computer telephony. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Founded in 1893, Jones Day is an international law firm with over 2,500 lawyers. The firm acts as principal outside counsel to, or provides significant legal representation for, more than half of the Fortune Global 500 companies. It is also the eighth largest law firm in the world by revenue, and the fourth highest grossing firm in the United States. In California alone, Jones Day has over 320 lawyers in its San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Irvine, and San Diego offices.

The law firm of Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard LLP recently announced the addition of two partners, Mary E. Rasenberger and Eleanor M. Lackman, both of whom are well known in the copyright and trademark fields. Both attorneys will join the firm’s digital media and intellectual property practice.

Rasenberger joins the firm from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where her practice focused on copyright and digital media. For over twenty years, she has worked in the area of intellectual property, with a focus on copyright law and technology.

Her experience includes the counsel of clients in a broad range of fields, including internet, publishing, entertainment, technology, media and technology; her areas of specialty include policy, litigation, infringement analysis, and licensing.

Significant cases in which Rasenberger has been involved include Viacom v. YouTube in the Southern District of New York and Second Circuit, UMG v. Veoh in the Ninth Circuit, and Reed Elsevier v. Muchnick in the Supreme Court, for which she drafted amicus briefs on behalf of rights holders.

She also represented Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt in a series of lawsuits brought by photographers, and represented several software companies in major copyright infringement and trade secret litigations.

She also represented clients in the Google Books Settlement and in DMCA rulemaking proceedings. She has also advised a variety of Internet and entertainment companies on copyright law in the online environment, and handled major transactions involving the acquisition and licensing of copyrights and related properties.

Before returning to Skadden in 2008, Ms. Rasenberger served as a Policy Planning Advisor for the Register of Copyrights; as well, she managed the National Digital Infrastructure & Information Preservation Program (NDIIPP) at the Library of Congress. In addition, she worked in the IP and technology groups of both a major record company and New York law firms.

Rasenberger was quoted as saying in a press release at the firm’s website: “I am thrilled to be joining new and old friends at CDAS. The firm’s deep expertise across all areas of entertainment and media law and high degree of professionalism have impressed me. CDAS is the perfect match for my practice in copyright and digital media. The expertise that Eleanor and I bring to CDAS will create terrific synergies for existing CDAS clientele and will help to grow the practice.”

Lackman joins from Hogan Lovells. She has broad experience in copyright, trademark and commercial litigation and counseling, especially in the areas of IP and new media.

She has provided representation to clients in a wide range of industries, including those in media, entertainment, luxury goods, consumer products, and telecom, in scores of federal and state court lawsuits at trial and appellate levels, as well as in arbitrations, domain name dispute proceedings and contentious matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Significant cases in which she has been involved include Capitol Records v. Naxos of America in the Court of Appeals of New York, Cartoon Network v. CSC Holdings and Tiffany v. eBay in the Southern District of New York and Second Circuit, U.S. v. ASCAP (In re Yahoo! and RealNetworks) in the Second Circuit and Supreme Court, and Capitol Records v. Thomas in the District of Minnesota. In these cases, which involved complex IP issues, she represented litigants or amicus parties.

She has also counseled a wide variety of clients in matters regarding copyright, trademark and technology licensing, and exploitation and enforcement.

Lackman was quoted as saying in the same press release at the firm’s website: “Cowan DeBaets provides a concentration of in-depth expertise in copyright, trademark and digital media law that not only rivals that of other leading firms of all sizes, but is on a trajectory of growth. The ability to match that expertise with business-conscious rates was a real draw for me to join the firm.”

Since Howrey dissolved last week, its partners have been going to many different firms. This Thursday, March 17, three more firms hired several former Howrey partners.

Morgan Lewis is getting Jason White, former IP litigation partner at Howrey, as well as commercial litigation partner, Romeo Quinto, Jr. They will be joining 11 former Howrey lawyers that left to Morgan Lewis in February, including David Clough, in the firms Chicago office. Quinto and White will also be joined by David Patariu, Mansi Shah, and Scott Sherwin, who were also formerly Howrey associates. In all, 19 former Howrey lawyers have now gone to Morgan Lewis. Clough also brought in two others with him to the firm: Scott Schutte, commercial litigator from Howrey and former head of class action practice Kenneth Kliebard.

Yet another four associates formerly from Howrey joined Morgan Lewis in Chicago: Kate Berezutskaya, Christopher Cabral, Gregory Fouts, Jayesh Hines-Shah, and Tedd Warden.

Scott Mendeloff and Gabriel Aizenberg, formerly litigation partners at Howrey, were hired by Greenberg Traurig in Chicago. They had been part of Howrey since June 2008 after leaving Sidley Austin.

Another firm that got in on the action was Arnold & Porter, which hired another former Howrey litigation partner, Paul Alexander, in its Palo Alto office.

Howrey, which confirmed the cuts in an e-mail to several media outlets, described the move as “a limited workforce reduction to adjust support staff levels to match our current and anticipated needs.

“This right-sizing of the firm,” the statement continues, “will allow Howrey to concentrate its resources on its three principal practice groups – antitrust, intellectual property and complex business litigation and to maintain our strong competitive position. We regret that this decision was necessary and will provide resources to help.”

Affected employees will receive a comprehensive severance package and full COBRA payments through Feb. 28, 2011, the firm said.

According to a report on AM Law Daily, the move continues a particularly rough couple of years at Howrey. In 2009, the firm’s partners saw their profits plunge by 35 percent and this past February, Howrey axed 29 associates and 65 staffers.

AM Law Daily reports the latest round of cuts happened during the last week and that no attorneys were affected.

He will join with a team of four associates from Bird & Bird.

Stéphane is a renowned specialist in IT and ecommerce law, with a transactional and litigation practice. His specialty is advising IT service providers on litigation matters, strategic project outsourcing and cross-border transactions.

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Stéphane was a partner at Bird & Bird for 10 years. During that time, he led the IT practice in Paris, and was also joint head of the international IT sector and the Outsourcing practice group.

In the article at legalweek.com, DLA global co-head of IP and IT Simon Levine was quoted as saying: “What we have been trying to do is build our group as a whole in Europe so that we have a full service offering in intellectual property, IT and media/sport. We wanted to make some headway in those areas that have a particularly strong market offering and Paris was one of the primary candidates with a lot of client demand for technology and outsourcing work. We will be looking to grow further over the coming months, particularly in areas of mainland Europe such as Spain and Central and Eastern Europe.”

DLA Piper today has 3,500 lawyers in offices throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. The firm’s clients range from multinational, Global 1000, and Fortune 500 enterprises to emerging companies developing industry-leading technologies.

In a press release at the firm’s site, CEO Steve Bochner was quoted as saying: “China is an incredibly vibrant market—one that we have been focused on and investing in for many years. Given Hong Kong’s position as a leading global financial center and the preferred overseas capital market for many Chinese enterprises, it is the logical place for us to open our second office in China. There are also considerable synergies between Hong Kong and the work we already are doing in China. We are extremely pleased to have found the right team and leadership to anchor our Hong Kong office, and look forward to continuing to build our presence in the Greater China region.”

The Hong Kong team will be led by Weiheng Chen, who co-heads the firm’s China practice along with Carmen Chang. He recently joined the firm from Milbank, Tweed, Hadley, and McCloy and has particular expertise in private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and capital markets. The Hong Kong team will work closely with the firm’s attorneys in Shanghai and the U.S.

The China practice represents clients in a variety of legal matters in the Greater China region and the U.S., including cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital investments, capital markets, joint venture and other forms of foreign investments.

Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati’s is nationally recognized as a leader in many areas of law, including the fields of corporate governance and finance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, securities class action litigation, employment law, and intellectual property. In addition to the newly opened Hong Kong location, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has offices in Austin, New York, Palo Alto, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Shanghai, and Washington, D.C.

The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) has launched an initiative to increase corporate America’s use of minority and women owned law firms for intellectual property (IP) law matters.

NAMWOLF plans to unveil the IP initiative at its upcoming annual meeting, October 3-6, at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in Washington D.C.

“Corporate legal departments don’t always think of minority and women owned firms when they look for outside counsel to represent them in IP matters,” said Jose Rojas, NAMWOLF IP initiative task force co-chairman. “But the fact is that a substantial number of NAMWOLF member firms have significant expertise and experience in this rapidly expanding area of the law. The goal of our initiative is get that word out to as many corporate legal departments as possible,” added Rojas.

Minority and women owned law firms are admitted to NAMWOLF following a screening process – overseen by in-house counsel at major corporations – that requires they be AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell, have a record of successfully representing multiple institutional clients, and pass a detailed reference check with only superior recommendations from clients.

“Virtually every corporation in America has IP issues,” said Yolanda Coly, NAMWOLF Managing Director. “We hope that this initiative – which is patterned after a successful ongoing initiative focusing on insurance law – will let corporations know they have an alternative to hire experienced minority and women owned law firms that are vetted by respected in-house counsel to handle registration, licensing and litigation of trademark, patent, licensing, copyright, and other IP matters.”

NAMWOLF was founded in 2001. It is a nonprofit trade association comprised of minority and women owned law firms and other interested parties throughout the United States.

In the press release at PR Newswire, Howrey Chairman and CEO Robert F. Ruyak was quoted as saying: “About 95 percent of the work the firm does is litigation, and about 40 percent of that deals with IP, mostly in the area of patents. Howrey handles somewhere between 40 and 50 trials a year and has more seasoned trial lawyers than just about anyone.” Ruyak also credits the firm’s “Powerhouse” designation to its intense focus on both litigation and Intellectual Property law.

Howrey has nine offices in the United States, six offices in Europe and one in Taiwan that handle IP litigation. Howrey’s presence in Europe allows it to coordinate cases where they are filed presenting both an efficient and effective representation for the firm’s clients, as related IP cases are frequently filed in U.S. and European courts.

Recent wins for the firm include successful representation of Yahoo Inc. at trial in August in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, where the jury found that the search giant did not infringe a patent for electronic messaging technology held by Bright Response LLC.

In July, Howrey won for DA NanoMaterials, a Division of DuPont-Air Products. In this case, as in others, Howrey was brought in to replace another firm, issues were complex and required meticulous preparation of the relevant legal arguments so juries could understand the technicalities, and multimedia involvement was critical.

Founded in 1956, Howrey LLP is a global law firm with over 625 attorneys and more than 35 economic, financial and regulatory consultants. A consistent American Lawyer “A-List” and PLC Which Lawyer? “Global 50″ firm, Howrey is one of the most frequently used law firms by the world’s leading companies.

The merger will create a full-service firm with strengths in business transactions, real estate, oil and gas, and litigation and intellectual property.

The combined firm will be called Lathrop & Gage. It will have 37 lawyers in Denver and rank among Colorado’s 20 largest law firms.

According to today’s article at denverpost.com, Jay Kamlet, firm partner was quoted as saying: ”It really brings us areas we weren’t able to do before — oil and gas and intellectual property.”

According to the article, Kamlet said Kamlet Reichert had been approached by a number of law firms about merging in the last six years, but had considered just three other offers. A deal never worked out because of philosophical and cultural differences between the firms, as well as reluctance to break existing leases to combine offices.

The merger comes just one month after Kamlet Reichert LLC celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Founded in 1873, Lathrop & Gage boasts a long tradition of success. The firm has 300 lawyers in 11 offices in six states. While the firm offers the depth and strength of a national firm, it also possesses the hands-on service, management style and aggressive competition of a smaller firm.
