Bromberg & Sunstein Partners Leave Over Merger Decision

A co-founder and a partner at Boston’s Bromberg & Sunstein have left over the firm’s decision not to merge with a larger firm.

Co-founder Lee C. Bromberg and partner Erik P. Belt resigned from the firm this week; they were the only two of 18 partners to vote for joining and unnamed, larger firm.

Bromberg is one of three lawyers who co-founded the firm in 1979. The IP boutique will now be called Sunstein Kann Murphy & Timbers.

Boston, Massachusetts’ Sunstein Kann Murphy & Timbers represents clients in a range of industries, including financial services, pharmaceutical, computer, semiconductor, electronics and consumer products. It employs 32 lawyers.

Hallihan IP Partners Brings on Attorneys

Chicago-based intellectual property boutique Hallihan IP Partners, founded by William J. Hallihan this Spring, has brought on two veteran attorneys.

Gregory S. Umberson, MD joins from Ericsson, where he worked on both patent and trademark issues involving both the US and other countries. His JD is from Tulane University Law School; his LL.M in Intellectual Property Law is from John Marshall Law School.

Jose J. Aparicio is a registered patent attorney with experience working in IP law in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical diagnostics, and medical devices. He also attended the John Marshall Law School, earning a JD and an LL.M.

The firm has also hired four patent agents: Donald F. Moyer, Ph.D, Jose J. Aparicio, Susan M. Davis, and David J. Bremer.

Hallihan IP Partners, LLC. is a full-service intellectual property law firm comprised of registered patent attorneys and patent agents, based in Chicago, Illinois.

Florida’s Kluger Kaplan to Dissolve

Kluger Peretz Kaplan & Berlin, a 40-lawyer firm with offices in Miami and Boca Raton, Florida, is dissolving as two name partners, Howard Berlin and Steven Peretz, jump ship.

Berlin is joining Berger Singerman in Miami as a shareholder. He will be part of the firm’s bankruptcy team.

Peretz will form an intellectual property boutique firm. Two other IP attorneys from his former firm will join him.

Alan Kluger and Justin Kaplan will keep a smaller firm focused on litigation.

Sughrue Mion Fires Incoming Associates, Cancels Summer Program

Washington DC-based intellectual property firm Sughrue Mion has fired a third of its incoming first year class, and canceled its 2009 summer associate program.

The incoming first years received a $5,000 severance payment.

Sughrue is one of the largest full service intellectual property practices in the United States, with offices in Washington, DC; Menlo Park, California; and Tokyo. The firm has a nanotechnology practice — maybe they plan to sue the gray goo.

Volpe and Koenig Grows IP Practice

Intellectual property boutique Volpe and Koenig announced the addition of three new IP attorneys. Abhik A. Huq, Daniel S. Goldberg, and Kristine L. Butler have joined the firm as Of Counsel.

Huq, most recently counsel in the Philadelphia office of Gibbons, has been an IP practitioner for more than 15 years.

Goldberg, also from Gibbons, has nearly 15 years of legal experience, and was an associate in the IP groups of Dechert and Duane Morris.

Butler joins the firm after seven years in the Princeton office of Mathews, Shepherd, McKay and Bruneau. She has extensive experience prosecuting and defending patent infringement claims.

Philadelphia’s Volpe and Koenig PC is dedicated solely to intellectual property law. It has a staff of more than 130 people, including over 50 patent attorneys, patent agents and technical advisers.

Day Casebeer Cuts 20% of Lawyers

The Recorder takes a look at Cupertino, California intellectual property boutique Day Casebeer Madrid & Batchelder, which last fall cut seven associates, nearly 20% of the firm’s lawyers, and two staff. Today, the firm has 27 lawyers.

According to [partner Rusty] Day, those laid off were given two months’ severance and their end-of-the-year bonus, which amounts to about a month’s worth of salary.

Some of the associates were able to quickly land jobs at big firms, being much-desired IP litigators and also getting cut before the tsunami of layoffs in the last two months. (None of the first-years, who had just started, were laid off.)

People still wonder about the effect of the Qualcomm discovery debacle on the firm’s business. Five Day Casebeer lawyers — as well as one from Heller Ehrman — were sanctioned in January 2008, after client Qualcomm failed to turn over crucial documents in a patent fight with Broadcom. Although the sanctions were lifted last year to give the attorneys a chance to tell their side of the story to the court, the final outcome isn’t certain.
