Kennedys Merges with Portugese Partner

After six years as an associate firm, Almeida & Athayde has merged with London based Kennedys and is now the firm’s 8th office outside of the UK. Kennedys opened its first US based office in Miami last September. According to the firm, this move is part of a global drive to become a leader in insurance/reinsurance law and reflects the growing importance of the Iberian peninsula for targeting the Portugese speaking countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

In addition to Miami and Portugal, Kennedy’s has nine offices in the U.K and international offices in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates.

London’s Clyde & Co Opens in New Jersey with 5 Laterals

Clyde & Co, a UK firm based in London, has opened its third US office in New Jersey. The firm, the 17th largest in the UK, already has offices in New York and San Francisco. It will temporarily operate out of Short Hills, NJ, while it looks for a permanent location.

The office is being opened with five attorneys moving from Connell Foley. Daren McNally, who was chair of the insurance coverage practice group at Connell Foley, will be joined by partner Barbara Almeida, and associates Matthew Gennaro, Meghan Goodwin, and Neha Bansal.

Clyde & Co is a leading international law firm with over 1300 staff based in 23 offices worldwide. The firm traces its history back to a single London office in 1933 that was partialy destroyed by bombs during World War 2.

Swine Flu Claims the Life of Texas Lawyer Sidney Davis Jr

Sidney Davis Jr, a partner at Texas firm Touchstone Bernays, died from complications of the H1N1 virus, better known as the Swine Flu.

Davis was appointed last month to lead an investigation into the conduct of two Dallas County constables who are accused of forcing employees to sell raffle tickets to raise money for their reelection campaigns. His practice, however, was focused on representing insurance companies.

Sidney Davis Jr graduated from the University of Texas School of Law at Austin in 1979, where he was the editor of the Texas Law Review. Mr. Davis was 54 years old.

Offit Kurman Picks up 6 Attorneys from Anderson Kill & Olick

Six attorneys are leaving Anderson Kill’s Philadelphia office and joining up with Offit Kurman, forming a new insurance recovery practice group there. This leavings Anderson Kill with four attorneys in Philadelphia, coming on the heels of last year’s departure of nine Philadelphia lawyers to Reed Smith. Last year’s move was part of a larger exodus, when 55 lawyers in all moved from Anderson Kill to Reed Smith, following aborted merger discussions between the two firms.

Michael Conley will head up the new practice group for Offit Kurman. He is joined by his co-managing shareholder Mark Gottlieb. Also moving are shareholder Frederick Pettit and associate Darin McMullen, both of whom will be principals at their new firm, and associates William Pillsbury and Meghan Finnerty have joined Offit Kurman as associates.
