Leading White-Collar Crime Defense Attorney Joins Venable LLP

The law firm of Venable LLP announced in recent days that Jan L. Handzlik, who is recognized as one of the country’s leading white-collar crime defense lawyers, has joined the firm as a partner in its Los Angeles office in its national SEC/White-Collar Group.

Handzlik joins from Greenberg Traurig, where he was also a partner. He is a nationally recognized authority on financial frauds, securities enforcement, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and export control matters. He has represented a variety of companies and individuals in the full spectrum of white-collar criminal investigations and prosecutions, including matters regarding allegations of environmental crimes, antitrust violations, tax fraud, financial institution fraud and healthcare fraud, as well as foreign bribery, government contract and export control matters. In addition, he handles complex civil business litigation.

Handzlik also has significant experience with conducting corporate internal investigations, designing law-compliance programs and advising public companies on corporate governance, disclosure and reporting issues. As well, he is an experienced trial attorney, with almost 100 jury trials to verdict. He lectures widely on trial practice, professional ethics and business fraud, and he has also served as independent monitor of a publicly traded company’s compliance with the FCPA and U.S. securities laws.

Internationally, Handzlik often leads investigations into allegations of bribery of foreign officials, violations of the export control and foreign asset control laws, and anti-competition matters. On a worldwide basis, he also seeks the recovery of assets stemming from criminal activity. Handzlik deals with all aspects of white-collar crime matters, including internal investigations, grand jury and enforcement investigations, regulatory and parallel civil and administrative proceedings, and representation at trial and on appeal.

Notable assignments include serving as Counsel to the Independent Warren Christopher Commission and Deputy General Counsel to the Independent William Webster Commission in investigations of the Los Angeles Police Department; Deputy General Counsel to the Rampart Independent Review Panel’s investigation into police corruption and officer-involved shootings; and as a Member of the Rampart After-Action Assessment Panel. In addition, he is also active in pro bono matters in the Los Angeles community.

Greenberg Traurig Adds to London Office

Greenberg Traurig Maher, the London arm of Greenberg Traurig, has added two shareholders and an associate to its UK restructuring practice. Joining the firm as partners are Paul Atherton and Jason Salman; and Helena Potts joins as associate.

All three arrive from Kirkland & Ellis. Atherton brings experience in restructuring, corporate recovery and insolvency. He has represented financial institutions as well as directors, creditors, debtors and insolvency practitioners on a variety of global restructuring matters.

Salman has experience in restructuring matters, having focused on intricate financial restructurings, acting for corporate debtors, financial creditors, directors and insolvency practitioners.

Greenberg Traurig Maher was established in 2009 by Greenberg Traurig. The firm represents UK-based and multinational clients in many different sectors, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, energy, real estate, financial services, information services, automotive, entertainment, retail and communications.

Stephen Tupper will be joining Greeberg Traurig Maher in its London office, and Anthony Casareale will be come aboard of counsel in Miami.

Tupper, who is a member of the Bar in New York as well as being licensed to practice in the UK, comes from Watson, Farley & Williams where he was head of the competition and regulatory group. He will establish a competition practice at Greenberg Traurig. Casareale, who will also work out of the White Plains, NY office, comes from Miami firm Akerman Senterfitt He brings with him a large real estate practice.

Recent laterals and layoffs in the legal sector:

John Brownlee joins Holland & Knight as partner in the firm’s McLean, Virginia and Washington DC offices. He was US Attorney in the Western District of Virginia from 2001 to 2008. He joins the firm’s enforcement defense and government contracts practices. He received his JD from the College of William & Mary in Virginia.

Sergio A. Pozzerle joins McDermott Will & Emery in Houston, as a partner in the energy & derivatives markets group. He joins from Pillsbury. His JD is from Yale Law School, where he was senior editor of Yale Law Journal.

Tim Jeveons joins Greenberg Traurig from White & Case, to launch the firm’s capital markets practice in London. He joined White & Case in 2003 from Linklaters.

Greenberg Traurig Recruiting Lateral Partners

Since January, Greenberg Traurig has recruited 45 lateral partners, and plans to acquire more this year.

In 2008, the firm hired 51 lateral partners in the entire year.

The firm’s most recent acquisition is Paul Maher from Mayer Brown, who is founding the UK’s Greenberg Traurig Maher LLP.

Greenberg Traurig Launches London Office [Update]

Greenberg Traurig has launched a London office, a new UK firm called Greenberg Traurig Maher LLP.

Paul Maher joins from Mayer Brown as founding member and office chair. He will also co-chair the firm’s global mergers & acquisitions practice.

UPDATE

Two additional Mayer Brown partners, corporate partner Fiona Adams and European environment head Cate Sharp, will join Maher in London. Sharp and Adams will be co-managing partners of the London office.
