Seyfarth Shaw Poaches Team from Sonnenschein

A group of five trusts & estates attorneys is defecting from Sonnenschein’s Los Angeles office to Seyfarth Shaw.

The group is led by partner Alan Yoshitake, a resident in the business service group. Yoshitake is joined by Mark Hansen and Edward McCaffery, both of counsel, and two associates.

Seyfarth Shaw employs over 750 attorneys located in nine offices throughout the United States including Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento, as well as Brussels, Belgium.

Husch Blackwell Lays Off 62

Husch Blackwell Sanders has laid off 17 lawyers and 45 staff members.

Chairman Dave Fenley said that more than a third of the attorneys were concentrated in real estate and that the rest were business attorneys, including some litigators.

“We do this every year and most of the time we’re net up at the end of the year. We have 26 kids starting in the fall and we’re hiring laterals, so we’ll probably be a little bit bigger at the end of the year than at the first of the year. These things do go on,” Fenley said.

Husch Blackwell Sanders LLP is a litigation and business services law firm with 675 attorneys in offices in 13 cities. The firm is a combination of two of the region’s nationally recognized law firms, Husch & Eppenberger, LLC and Blackwell Sanders LLP, and most recently, Welsh & Katz, a well-respected Chicago intellectual property boutique.

Nixon Peabody Launches Israel Practice

Nixon Peabody has launched an Israeli business practice group, to counsel companies in the Jewish State and those doing business with them.

The move may prove controversial, as there are calls to divest from Israel in the wake of the recent Gaza offensive.

Sam Feigin and Mark Kass, partners in the New York-based law firm’s Washington, DC office, will lead the practice.

The office’s lawyers, who hail from 14 Nixon Peabody offices in the US and abroad, work in the high-tech, life sciences, interactive entertainment, digital media and other sectors.

The offerings will include legal and business services to companies and investors doing business in Israel, and to Israeli companies, investors and entrepreneurs with commercial interests abroad.
