Carl Nichols Joins WilmerHale

Carl Nichols, a former senior litigator for the Department of Justice has joined WilmerHale as a partner.

Nichols worked in the DoJ under President George W Bush from 2005 until 2009, serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Federal Programs Branch of the Civil Division, and later as the Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General. While with the Justice Department, Nichols handled several high profile cases, including cases enjoining state investigations into alleged acts of the National Security Agency and various lawsuits filed against telecommunications companies over their participation in national security programs. Prior to his stint at Justice, Nichols was with Boies, Schiller & Flexner.

At WilmerHale, Nichols practice will be in the Litigation/Controversy Department, and a member of the Government and Regulatory Litigation and Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation Practice Groups, as well as the Business Trial Group.

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr LLP has twelve offices across the US, Europe and Asia. It was created in 2004 through the merger of the Boston’s Hale & Dorr and the Washington’s Wilmer Cutler & Pickering, and employs more than 1,100 attorneys worldwide. Reinhart Adds Shareholders

David O. Krier and Christopher E. Rechlicz have been named shareholders in Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, a business-oriented law firm with offices in Wisconsin and Illinois. Krier is a member of the firm’s Litigation Practice while Rechlicz is a member of the organization’s Business Law and Banking and Finance Practices.

Reinhardt Boerner Van Deuren employs more than 200 attorneys and serves clients throughout the United States and internationally.

Speechly Bircham Hires 90 from Campbell Hooper

London law firm Speechly Bircham has hired 90 people, including 17 partners, from the dissolving Campbell Hooper.

The hirings, which are not being characterized as a merger, give Speechly Bircham a total of over 400 employees. The firm says the move makes Speechly Bircham on of the top 50 UK firms.

Speechly Bircham has also reorganized, creating three groups — business law with 120 lawyers, real estate with 70 lawyers, and private clients with 60 lawyers.

Founded in the 19th century, Speechly Bircham is a 200-lawyer firm based in the City of London, with a strong reputation for both commercial and private client work.

Alerding Castor Merges With Brian Hewitt

Indianapolis, Indiana business law firm Alerding Castor is merging with the practice of Brian Hewitt, and setting moving to a new location in Greenwood.

The new firm will be called Alerding Castor Hewitt LLP.

Alerding Castor is an Indianapolis law firm focusing on business law, information technology law (including SaaS law and legal technology consulting), private equity consulting, and business litigation. It has 15 employees.

Tallman Hudders Merging with Norris McLaughlin

Pennsylvania law firm Tallman, Hudders & Sorrentino is merging with New Jersey’s Norris McLaughlin & Marcus. The merger goes into effect next Monday.

Each office will keep it’s original name. The new firm will be the largest independent business law firm in the region, with 150 lawyers across offices in Allentown, Pennsylvania; Bridgewater, New Jersey; and Manhattan.

The merger has been under consideration for over two years.

Harvey Simard Moves HQ to HK

Montréal, Quebec’s Harvey Simard Law Corporation has moved its headquarters to Hong Kong, and brought on Gaston Bruneau to head its Business Law Section there.

The firm has operated in East Asia for 15 years, and is a Registered Foreign Law Firm in the Law Society of Hong Kong.

Founded in 1995, Harvey Simard is a Canadian business and business-immigration law firm. It has offices in Hong Kong, Montreal, Beijing, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Fennemore Craig Cuts 7 Lawyers, 10 Staff

Phoenix, Arizona-based law firm Fennemore Craig has announced it cut 17 jobs.

Ten staffers were let go this month; and seven attorneys were shown the door this February. The firm blames the economic meltdown.

Business law firm Fennemore Craig, PC employs over 200 attorneys, across offices in Phoenix, Tucson, and Nogales, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Denver, Colorado.

The firm offers legal services in financial restructuring, bankruptcy, and creditor’s rights, commercial litigation, estate planning, government relations, and intellectual property. The firm also offers services in American Indian law.

Fennemore Craig is one of the oldest law firms in the Mountain West, first established in Phoenix in the Arizona Territory in 1885. It is the oldest law firm in Arizona. In 2008, the firm was listed number 220 on the The National Law Journal 250.

Pugh Jones Partners with McCarter & English

Chicago’s Pugh, Jones, Johnson & Quandt and Newark’s McCarter & English are forming an alliance.

While remaining separate and independent law firms, they will recommend and provide coordinated legal services to their respective clients, including complex litigation, corporate transactions, municipal finance, commercial real estate, employment matters, and property tax appeals.

Pugh, Jones, Johnson & Quandt, one of the largest minority-owned law firms in Chicago, serves Fortune 500, governmental and entrepreneurial clients.

McCarter & English, established more than 160 years ago, represents Fortune 500 and middle-market companies in their national, regional and local litigation. Its 400 attorneys are based in offices in Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Stamford and Wilmington.

McMillan Absorbs Thackray Burgess

McMillan LLP is merging with Calgary, Canada’s Thackray Burgess.

The Calgary firm will become part of McMillan, and all of its 30 lawyers and 70 staff will remain.

The merger, which will become official May 1st, will increase McMillan’s total workforce to 200 lawyers and 350 staff. Prior to the agreement, McMillan was a two-city firm with offices in Toronto and Montreal.

Thackray was formed in 2001 by the merger of Blain & Company and Evans Higa Burgess LLP. Many of the firm’s founding partners left larger Calgary partnerships in the late 1990s to establish a boutique corporate law firm that specialized in energy law.

This is the second merger in four years for McMillan, which merged in 2005 with Mendelsohn GP.

McMillan LLP, formerly McMillan Binch Mendelsohn LLP, is a Canadian law firm headquartered in Toronto. The firm specializes in business and natural resource law.

Yale Launches 3-Year JD+MBA Program

Yale announced today it has created a joint juris doctor and master of business administration program for completion in three academic years.

The program is in addition to the school’s existing four-year joint JD and MBA program. Both programs are partnerships between Yale Law and the Yale School of Management.

Indiana University School of Law Indianapolis and Northwestern University School of Law also have three-year joint programs.

The accelerated JD and MBA program is geared to students with an interest in business law, but will also prepare students for management and other business fields.

Coursework will be spread over six semesters, and participants will graduate at the same time as their entering JD class. Like their classmates in the regular JD program, those in the integrated and accelerated program will have two free summers in which they can work in the law or business fields. Students in the new program will spend their first and third years at the law school, and the second at the management school.

Students must apply for the program during their first year at the law school.

Dreier Stein Lawyers to Found New Snell & Wilmer Office

At least eight lawyers from Dreier, Stein, Kahan, Browne, Woods, George are joining Phoenix, Arizona’s Snell & Wilmer, to open the latter firm’s first Los Angeles office.

The group consists of partners Marshall Horowitz, Susan Grueneberg, Jason S. Kim and Henry S. David, so far. Four associates from Dreier Stein will also join the new office on February 1st.

The Los Angeles office is looking for new business lawyers, litigators and intellectual property attorneys.

The move is the latest involving Dreier Stein, the Santa Monica-based affiliate of Dreier LLP, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month after its founder, Marc Dreier, was charged with investment fraud.

Last week, a group of entertainment litigators joined Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi’s Los Angeles office; while name partner Larry Stein, along with a few other partners and associates, jumped to what is now Liner Grode Stein Yankelevitz Sunshine Regenstreif & Taylor.

Another name partner, Bob Kahan, left with up to eight lawyers for what is now Eisner, Frank & Kahan.

Snell & Wilmer was founded in 1938 by Frank Snell Jr. and Mark Wilmer. The firm is the largest in the state of Arizona and the 99th largest in the US by number of lawyers, according to the National Law Journal’s 2007 statistics.

Gunderson Dettmer Fires Half of First-Year Class [Video]

Legal blog Above the Law is reporting that Gunderson Dettmer has laid off a number of junior associates.

While the firm has yet to respond to requests for comments, sources say that half the first-year class has been shown the door, as well as a number of more senior attorneys.

An Above the Law tipster says they were sold on the firm as being smaller, and more caring, and now find it hard to believe they are already looking for new jobs having only been at the firm for a couple of months.

Gunderson Dettmer was founded over 10 years ago and, according to their website, “has become the nation’s leading business law firm for entrepreneurs, emerging growth companies and venture capitalists.”

The firm did employ over 100 lawyers in four offices– Silicon Valley, Boston, New York, and San Diego.

Imperial Finance & Trading, a leader in premium finance for life insurance, life insurance sales, and structured settlements, has announced the addition of Anne Dufour Zuckerman to its senior management team as general counsel.

CEO Tony Mitchell said that Zuckerman’s experience will help the company as they expand their market reach.

Prior to joining Imperial Finance and Trading as head of the legal department, Zuckerman was associate general counsel at Office Depot where she handled the business law affairs of the $15 billion dollar retailer.

According to a company press release, Zuckerman has a combined 22 years of legal experience in both business law and commercial litigation.
