BuckleySandler Continues Raid of Mayer Brown

BuckleySandler has made four hires to its national criminal & civil enforcement practice at its Washington D.C. office, the firm said in a press release Wednesday.

Joining the firm from Mayer Brown is partner James T. Parkinson; counsel Adam Miller and associate Lauren R. Randell. Also joining the practice group as counsel is Joseph J. Reilly, who previously served as special counsel at Sullivan & Cromwell’s Washington D.C. office.

The additions from Mayer Brown comes a month after BuckleySandler raided Mayer Brown for a three-person team of litigators that included David S. Krakoff, the former co-chair of Mayer Brown’s white collar litigation practice.

Firm Co-Chair Andrew L. Sandler explained the moves in a press release.

“We have made strategic decisions to bring in top-notch White Collar lawyers to assist our clients nationally as they tackle the challenges arising from increased scrutiny and an ever-changing regulatory and enforcement environment,” Sandler said. “Jamie, Joe, Adam and Laurie are terrific additions and further strengthen our team of experienced White Collar defense attorneys.”

BuckleySandler Gains Three Counsel

BuckleySandler LLP, a leading financial services and criminal and civil enforcement defense law firm, has added counsel to each of its three offices. Joining the firm are Warren Traiger in New York, John Stoner in Los Angeles and Howard Eisenhardt in Washington D.C.

“The addition of these talented and accomplished senior lawyers expands the scope of our practice and deepens our ability to serve the needs of financial services clients, particularly with respect to mortgage lending, fair lending, privacy/data security, anti-money laundering and retail deposit matters,” said Andrew L. Traiger, formerly a partner at McConnell, Dunning & Barwick, brings significant expertise on the Community Reinvestment Act (“CRA”) as well as fair lending compliance and analysis experience. Stoner, also a former partner at McConnell, Dunning & Barwick, has substantial warehouse lending expertise and extensive transactional experience to the Firm’s growing Los Angeles Office. Eisenhardt has served as in-house counsel for many years and most recently was the Director of Privacy at KeyBank from 2007 to 2010. provides expertise on privacy, data security, bank deposits, anti-money laundering, and the Bank Secrecy Act.

Mayer Brown Loses Litigation Co-Chair To BuckleySander

Bloomberg: Former co-chair of Mayer Brown’s litigation practice, David S. Krakoff has been hired by BuckleySandler. Another former Mayer partner, Christopher Regan, joins Krakoff at the firm where the two will specialize in financial-services enforcement.

The firm has been aggressively growing its boutique practice since its inception in March 2009. Created through a merger with Buckley Kolar and a number of lawyers led by Andrew Sandler, a former Skadden partner, it now has some 90 attorneys in its ranks.

BuckleySandler is headquartered in Washington DC, with offices in New York and Los Angeles. It represents clients in the financial services industry, such as banks, mortgage lenders, and credit card companies.

Samuel J. Buffone has left Ropes & Gray’s government enforcement practice group to become a partner in Washington D.C.-based financial services law firm BuckleySandler.

Buffone had been with Ropes & Gray since 1992. According to a firm press release, Buffone brings over 35 years of experience representing individual and corporate clients in criminal and complex civil litigation and enforcement matters in the U.S. Among his notable achievement, Buffone argued and won an appeal in the U.S. Supreme Court last year barring further prosecution of a former Enron executive on the grounds of double jeopardy (Yeager v United States 129 S Ct. 2360 (2009).

“Sam is one of the leading criminal and civil enforcement lawyers in Washington, DC. His extensive trial and appellate experience will substantially enhance BuckleySandler’s enforcement capabilities. We are delighted to have him join us,” said Andrew L. Sandler, co-chair of BuckleySandler.

Noel M. Gruber is joining BuckleySandler LLP as Counsel. He is a former attorney of Kennedy & Baris LLP and has represented U.S. institutions on securities, corporate, transactional, and regulatory issues.

BuckleySandler Adds More Lawyers

BuckleySandler, founded in March when two Skadden partners left the firm’s Washington DC office, has grown to 55 lawyers with the addition of two lawyers.

Stephen Ambrose Jr. joins from GE Capital, where he was general counsel of the consumer finance unit. He will be managing partner of the firm’s new New York office. He earned his JD at Fordham University Law School, where he served as Editor of the Fordham Law Review.

Robert Cook joins as of counsel from Countrywide Financial, where he was deputy general counsel. He was previously special counsel at the Federal Reserve Board.

Skadden Partners Jump Ship, Found New Firm

Two partners from Skadden’s Washington, DC office, Andrew Sandler and Benjamin Klubes, are leaving the firm to form their own firm, BuckleySandler.

The firm will include all 36 attorneys from Buckley Kolar, a DC financial regulation boutique.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, founded in 1948, is a prominent law firm based in New York City. With over 2,000 attorneys, it is one of the largest and highest-grossing law firms in the world. Forbes magazine called Skadden “Wall Street’s most powerful law firm.”
