Morris Manning & Martin announced today that it is reinstating it summer associate program. The firm will be hosting nine associates during the summer months.

According to the firm’s human resource partner, Vanessa Goggans, the firm opted out of the ten week program in 2009 due to economic reasons, a trend among many law firms. However, this year the firm has seen significant economic growth, Goggan reports and the firm is excited to reinstate the program.

New IP Firm Launches in Atlanta

McKeon, Meunier, Carlin & Curfman, LLC launched in Atlanta on Monday, April 19, 2010. Attorneys from top Atlanta firms formed the firm, which will focus solely on intellectual property law.

The four founders are Tina McKeon, Ph.D. and Andrew Meunier from the Atlanta office of Fish & Richardson, an international IP law firm; Christopher Curfman, Ph.D. from the Atlanta office of Ballard Spahr, and Gregory Carlin, who joins the firm from Edwards Lifesciences, a medical device maker in Southern California.

According to the press release at the firm’s website, Dr. Tina McKeon was quoted as saying: “I am pleased to be stepping into a small firm with such an elite team. Hawkins & Parnell Opening in Austin with Brown McCarroll Laterals

Atlanta’s Hawkins & Parnell is opening its doors in Austin with the help of several partners from Brown McCarroll, according to a tipster.

Long-time partners Todd Wade, Kay Andrews, Bill Fountain, Taylor Smith, and Chris Ege, along with numerous associates and legal assistants are making the move. Todd Wade and Kay Andrews were members of the management committee at Brown McCarroll. The new office will be up and running on Wednesday, February 17.

Hawkins & Parnell was founded in 1963 and has offices in Atlanta, Georgia; Charleston, West Virginia; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; and St. Louis, Missouri. In Dallas, Los Angeles, and Missouri, the firm is known as Hawkins, Parnell & Thackston, LLP.

Revenues Up at Barnes & Thornburg

Barnes & Thornburg reported that gross revenues increased from $212,617,000 in 2008 to $241,583,000 in 2009, a 14% increase. Profits per equity partner also increased 11% to $640,614. Barnes & Thornburg opened new offices in Atlanta, Delaware, and Columbus, Ohio last year and also completed a merger with The Parsinen Law Firm in Minneapolis. The expansion helped the firm to diversify its practice areas and placed them in higher priced markets. Another factor in increased revenues this year was the firms increased workload (up 40%) in creditor representation, one of the firm’s major areas of practice.

Founded in 1982, Indianapolis based Barnes & Thornburg has a broad range of practice areas such as aviation law, jury research, labor and employment, intellectual property and estate planning. The firm also engages in lobbying work. There are approximately 475 lawyers working for the firm in 7 offices including Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Elkhart, Indiana, South Bend and Grand Rapids.

Alston & Bird Considers New Office Building

Alston & Bird has hired a developer to explore constructing a potential new office building in Atlanta, Georgia. The Law Firm would be the anchor tenant o the building. Daniel Corporation is the development company investigating the project. Last year Alston & Bird said it wanted to downsize from its current 420,000 square feet to 350,000 square feet. The firm has also considered moving into another building or renewing the lease at the current locations. The firm’s lease expires in October 2013.

Founded in 1893, Alston & Bird is a general practice firm with about 900 attorneys and offices in Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, North Carolina, New York City, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley and Ventura County.

Thompson Hine Adds to Associates Roster

Ten former law clerks at Thompson Hine have all been elevated to associates. They are Leonard Lescosky of the firm’s Atlanta office; Kyla Baker, Jessica Groza, Barbara Lum, Tom Ritzert and Jana Shearer of Cleveland; Terrance Mebane of Columbus; Angela Ceccarelli of Dayton; Keith Binder of New York; and Jaelyn Edwards of Washington D.C.

Bondurant Mixson & Elmore Adds Two New Partners

Atlanta-based firm Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore has elected Nicole Iannarone and Lisa Strauss as partners with the firm.

Strauss previously served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Her practice focuses on representing corporations and individuals in business disputes. Iannarone represents both plaintiffs and defendants in commercial and appellate litigation and class actions.

Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore was founded in 1977 and has 30 attorneys in its Atlanta office.

Rogers & Hardin Promotes Lori Gelchion to Partner

Atlanta’s Rogers & Hardin has a new partner. Lori Gelchion, a corporate lawyer with a practice focusing on Mergers and Acquisitions and securities law has been made a partner. Gelchion received her JD from the University of Georgia Law School, where she was on the editorial board of the law review.

Rogers & Hardin was founded in 1976 in Atlanta, Georgia, and has an international practice with clients around the country and the world.

Sutherland Ditches Lockstep

Atlanta based Sutherland is joining the rush to abandon lockstep compensation and is moving to a merit based system similar to the one other top firms have adopted or are planning to adopt. Associates will be classified as junior, mid-level and senior, with the levels roughly corresponding to their time in the firm. Unlike lockstep compensation increases, however, it’s possible for an associate to move forward at a faster or slower pace than his or her classmates, based on demonstrating proficiency at certain core skills. Sutherland says this change is designed to meet the wishes of their clients, many of whom are unwilling to continue to pay billing rates based solely on the length of time an associate has been with the firm.

Additionally, Sutherland is cutting the pay for new associates in its Atlanta office, but associates in its other offices will continue to earn $160k. Atlanta associates will now start at $135k.

Small Payroll Changes at Alston & Bird

Alston & Bird is changing the way it computes overtime for its secretaries. Up until now, Alston & Bird has paid overtime starting at 37.5 hours per week, slightly more generous than is required by law. Now the firm is revising its overtime policy to match what is required by state and federal laws. Overtime will begin at 40 hours per week (or after 8 hours per day in California).

To be clear, this is a relatively minor change. At most, secretaries will lose 1.25 hours of pay per week. As cost cutting measures go, this one is relatively minor.

Carlton Fields Picks up Four Lawyers from Morris, Manning & Martin

Three shareholders, Susan Spencer, Terresa Tarpley and James Walker IV and one associate, Shellie Hammock, have made the move from Morris, Manning & Martin to Carlton Fields in Atlanta. The four are corporate lawyers and were attracted by Carlton Fields’ larger size and broader array of practice areas.

Carlton Fields, which is based in Tampa, opened its Atlanta office in 2005. With the addition of these four attorneys, they now have 33 lawyers in Atlanta and plan to expand further, with a target of 50.

Alston Bird Defers its Deferrals, Indefinitely

Back in March, we told you that Alston Bird was deferring its incoming class of new associates. With so many firms doing this, it hardly seems like news anymore. Now, however, the same group of new associates have been deferred again, and this time the deferral is indefinite.

This does not bode well for this years group of summer associates who are still waiting for offers.

The ides of September are nearly upon us, and Alston & Bird still haven’t decided who they want to keep. Not to worry, says the firm, offers are forthcoming, just as soon as they get it all figured out. The firm has decided to coordinate offers as a firm this year, but decision are being made office by office and not every office has finalized its decision. I sure hope someone at Alston & Bird gave the summers an explanation that needs a little less parsing than that…
