Anderson Kill & Olick, a corporate law firm based in New York is opening a new office in Stamford, Connecticut. The firm aims to boost its capability to represent various policyholders on the insurance recovery matters. Charles T. Lee, who has extensive experience in commercial litigation and insurance recovery, will lead the firm’s new office located at 1055 Washington Boulevard. Anderson Kill’s new Insurance Recovery Group in Stamford will also be joined by Edward J. Stein, Amanda Winalski, Costa N. Kensington, Helen J. Williamson, Michael J. Lane, Dennis A. Zagroba and Linda Gerstel. The team is expected to bring strong corporate capabilities to Stamford operations.

Lee said that the state of Connecticut has a strong market for the insurance recovery practice. He noted that Anderson Kill’s decision to open a new office in Stamford as now is a tactical business strategy since he believes the insurance industry will boom in the area in the coming years. “We see tremendous opportunity in Connecticut, particularly on the insurance recovery front, where law firms have largely left the field to the insurance industry. At the same time, we will have a robust corporate capability and will be able to offer clients a full suite of legal services.”

Robert M. Horkovich, the firm’s managing partner, explained that opening a new office in Connecticut is part of Anderson Kill’s long-term business plan. “Anderson Kill long has successfully represented policyholders in Connecticut – securing for them significant insurance recoveries and helping them with business problems, so our Connecticut office will be building from a strong foundation.” Horkovich also expressed his full confidence in Lee’s ability to lead the firm’s operations in Stamford. He said that Lee’s expertise is certainly a big contribution to the firm’s expansion plan. “Charlie in particular is a star in insurance recovery, and also is a versatile litigator with strong roots in the Connecticut legal community. We are looking forward to helping clients in New England across a broad range of legal matters.”

Anderson, a founding partner of Anderson Kill & Olick, died from pneumonia Friday at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was 82.

Considered a leader in insurance coverage law, Anderson was once described by BusinessWeek as “the dean of policyholder’s attorneys,” the New York Law Journal reports. According to an internal letter from Anderson Kill managing partner Robert M. Horkovich, Anderson had been hospitalized for some time because of a rare form of double pneumonia.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a mentor whose boundless energy, creativity, tenacity and zeal on behalf of policyholders has inspired those of us now working at Anderson Kill, as well as hundreds of attorneys in practice throughout the nation,” Horkovich said.

Anderson founded Anderson Kill & Olick in Manhattan in 1969. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law and then joined Chadbourne & Parke, where he eventually made partner. He also served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the 1960’s prior to founding Anderson Kill.

Funeral services are scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave. at 81st Street.

This leavings Anderson Kill with four attorneys in Philadelphia, coming on the heels of last year’s departure of nine Philadelphia lawyers to Reed Smith. Last year’s move was part of a larger exodus, when 55 lawyers in all moved from Anderson Kill to Reed Smith, following aborted merger discussions between the two firms.

Michael Conley will head up the new practice group for Offit Kurman. He is joined by his co-managing shareholder Mark Gottlieb. Also moving are shareholder Frederick Pettit and associate Darin McMullen, both of whom will be principals at their new firm, and associates William Pillsbury and Meghan Finnerty have joined Offit Kurman as associates.

The National Law Journal is reporting on the current “slew” of mid-sized firm mergers:

In the past week, at least five small and midsize firms have said they are merging or boosting their attorney ranks. New York-based Anderson Kill & Olick announced that it is merging with San Buenaventura, Calif.-based Wood & Bender. Both firms specialize in insurance recovery, and the merged firm will have nearly 100 attorneys.

Denver-based Sherman & Howard announced it is merging with litigation boutique Netzorg McKeever Koclanes & Bernhardt, also based in Denver, as well as with Phoenix-based Mohr, Hackett, Pederson, Blakley & Randolph. The combination will bring Sherman & Howard’s attorney headcount more than 190.

Newark, N.J.-based Sills Cummis & Gross is merging with New York-based Silverberg Stonehill Goldsmith & Haber. The nine additional attorneys from Silverberg Stonehill will expand Sills Cummis’ New York office. Columbia, S.C.-based Nexsen Pruet has scooped up Raleigh, N.C.-based Sanford Holshouser, while Portland, Ore.-based Miller Nash has added four attorneys from Newcomb, Sabin, Schwartz & Landsverk.

We already reported on several recent mergers.

The reason for all the merging is obvious — firms need to save money and find new sources of capital. Combining resources with another firm (or letting them buy you out and calling it a “merger”) is one way to do that — once you’ve already cancelled bonuses, frozen salaries, and extorted money from partners.

Also, what are all these mergers going to do for law firm name bloat? I mean, what’s that new merged Denver firm going to be called? Netzorg Mohr Sherman McKeever Hackett Howard Koclanes Pederson Blakley Randolph & Bernhardt?

Via NLJ.
