New Round of Salary Cuts at Allen Matkins

Allen Matkins is having a rough year. Back at the end of March the firm let some attorneys go. First year associate salaries were cut, along with the salaries of some additional associates. Now it appears they are finishing the job with additional layoffs and more salary cuts.

Tipsters at Above the Law reported the new cuts, saying that associates who are low on hours will only be receiving 60% of their original salary with the other 40% to be paid at the end of the year if the hours are made up. How they’re going to make up the hours in this market is anyone’s guess.

Allen Matkins Cuts 10, Slashes Salaries

California’s Allen Matkins has cut six associates and four staffers, according to online sources.

In addition, first years’ salaries have been cut from $160,000 to $145,000.

Other associates will see their salary reduced by up to 30%; the criteria for choosing which associates will be affected have not been announced.

Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory LLP was founded in 1977 and is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. The firm has additional offices in Century City, San Francisco, Orange County, Del Mar Heights, and San Diego, California.

McIntosh Joins Allen Matkins

Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Mallory & Natsis LLP announced the expansion of its corporate practice group with the addition of Daniel McIntosh as chair of the firm’s corporate practice group in the firm’s Los Angeles and Century City offices.

He joins Allen Matkins as the former co-chair of Morrison & Foerster’s Los Angeles Entertainment and Technology Group. He has represented William Morris Agency for more than 20 years, including most recently in the sale of WMA’s three office buildings and the long term lease of its new world headquarters in Beverly Hills. Other clients include Lucasfilm, Ltd., Lucasfilm Foundation and Content Partners, LLC.

McIntosh is past president of the Beverly Hills Bar Association. He also serves on the board of directors of the ABA Museum of Law, of which he is the current vice president, and is a past member of the boards of directors of Public Counsel and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Before joining Morrison & Foerster, he was a partner with Kaplan Livingston, a preeminent Beverly Hills entertainment law firm. McIntosh received his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law and his A.B., cum laude, from the University of California, Berkeley.

Law Firm Layoffs Spark Lawsuits

The ABA Journal notes that an unprecedented wave of law firm layoffs is leading to a second wave of ex-employee lawsuits.

The suits could air “salacious allegations that once remained hidden within firm walls,” according to the Daily Journal. To help avoid suits, law firms need to follow the advice they give their own clients, the story says: Use standard termination procedures, give employees accurate reviews, and hand out generous severance packages.

The article quotes John Barber, a labor and employment partner at Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith. “Lawyers are litigious by nature, so law firms should be particularly sensitive to protecting themselves when they lay people off,” he said.

Henry Har, a formerly of at Nixon Peabody, says the culture at the Los Angeles office was racist, sexist and homophobic.

Gary Green, a former associate at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, claims he was fired for giving a negative review to a more junior associate.

Margot Jackson, a former real estate attorney at Allen Matkins, who alleges she was fired because of her race and gender.
