Summary: A former California neurosurgeon has been charged with a sex scheme to impregnate women and then rape their children.

Strangely disturbing charges have arisen against a California doctor. Former brain surgeon James Kohut of Soquel, California has been accused of impregnating women with the intent of raping their children. Reports indicate the scheme has gone back to 1997 in Santa Cruz County, Riverside, Sacramento, and Seaside.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel broke the story of the 57-year-old doctor being charged with the rape of children with two nurses in Santa Cruz County. Officials claim he has targeted women from Florida, Ohio, Nevada, Louisiana and even Australia for twenty years so that he could have sex with their children. He allegedly prefers kids between the ages of 6 to 8 and to be called “Daddy.”

Assistant District Attorney Steven Moore asked in court papers for the judge to deny bail. Moore wrote, “For nearly 20 years, the defendant has had a fixed sexual desire to be part of multiple ‘taboo families’ where the parents raise their children sexually. He has a specific desire to have sex with a mother and a daughter. He then wants to impregnate the daughter and raise the child sexually in the ‘taboo’ family lifestyle.”

Apparently, Kohut has been investigated multiple times since 1997 but has never been charged before. Two nurses, Emily Stephens of Pima County, Arizona and Rashel Brandon of Watsonville, California. Brandon’s husband gave police a video showing his wife and Kohut sexually abusing children. This video led to the arrest of Kohut, Stephens, and Brandon.

Kohut has a wife and two children. He was originally charged with ten felony charges related to sodomy, lewd acts with children and other forced offenses, to which he pleaded not guilty to, but an additional charge was added when another victim came forward. When the investigation started, there were three victims but authorities have gathered information on a possible seven victims. The most recent charge of lewd acts with a child claims that he raped a 14-year-old girl from Louisiana between January 2003 and December 2005.

Moore wrote, “Kohut had a sexual compulsion and has solicited victims for decades. Multiple police agencies have investigated the defendant over the last 20 years, including: Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Seaside police, Australian Federal Police as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation have investigated defendant for similar crimes going back to 1997.”

He continued in the court document, “He admitted that he had been in a relationship with a woman in Florida who had a 13-year-old and 4-uear-old child,” in regards to an alleged conversation he had with a Vermont woman about his relationship with a woman from Florida. “He admitted that he had sex in front of those children and fondled the 13 year old. … He would ask (the Florida woman) to recruit friends for him and he wanted her to call him ‘daddy.’”

Kohut had just started a new job at a Fort Smith, Arkansas hospital when he was arrested. The hospital has since fired him.

The judge in the case ruled that Kohut was entitled to bail. The amount will be determined on June 28. Kohut’s attorney Jay Rorty claims his client is innocent. “There is no indication that law enforcement is in possession of any video or photographic evidence of Dr. Kohut committing such crimes,” Rorty said. “Much of the evidence against Dr. Kohut consists of allegations by Brandon, who has already demonstrated a willingness to lie to investigators regarding her own crimes even when confronted with images evidencing her criminal conduct.”

Should Kohut be found guilty, he faces a minimum of 165 years in prison. Alabama and Arkansas have revoked his medical license. He surrendered his license in California voluntarily as part of the bail conditions. Moore wanted Kohut held without bail because he may at risk of harming himself. Moore wrote, “The defendant has shown that he is mentally unstable. He has written several letters showing an intent to kill himself. He has been found in the jail with a sharp object.”
