For clients looking to fight a legal battle, hiring the best lawyer is more important than hiring a big name. While Big Law firms often have excellent litigation departments, boutique litigation firms still attract a fair share of business in major markets such as New York City. Everyone from corporate clients to people with smaller cases want the best value, and many boutique firms have earned a reputation for not only providing quality legal service, but also for being able to provide a personal touch that is often lacking with giant national firms.

This year, JD Journal compiled a list of the top boutique litigation firms in New York City, and the following order is ranked by size. The firms listed below have less than a hundred lawyers and focus on a few practice areas.

With almost 100 attorneys, Moses & Singer is the largest New York boutique litigation firm on our list. However, they stated that what sets them apart from Big Law firms is that they offer personal service to their clients. “In a world of giant merger-built law businesses, Moses & Singer offers a difference. That difference is the personal service of leading attorneys – partners in the firm – dedicated to understanding your legal needs, anticipating your challenges and advancing your goals. The direct involvement of our partners and our commitment to your success means aggressive, results-driven representation with total focus on value, quality and individual attention,” their website states.

According to LawCrossing, Moses & Singer provides legal services to companies, individuals and families in areas such as banking and finance, entertainment, media, real estate, healthcare, advertising and technology.

2. Kobre & Kim

Kobre & Kim has offices around the world, and it is a unique firm because it focuses solely on disputes and investigations. According to their website, “Other lawyers regularly appoint us as special advocates for their clients in sensitive situations involving conflicts of interest. We do not ordinarily maintain repeat clients of our own.” Kobre & Kim’s New York office has 87 attorneys, and the firm focuses on litigation, arbitration or investigations as well as partnering with law firms as client advisors. They stated that because they do not have repeat clients, they are able to avoid conflicts of interest and maintain independence as advocates.

3. Zuckerman Spaeder LLP

Zuckerman Spaeder has 73 attorneys and is nationally recognized for representing “individual and institutional clients in complex, highly contested civil and criminal cases.” According to the firm’s website, clients choose Zuckerman Spaeder for their litigation needs because they are experts at resolving legal problems.

“We count among our ranks many of the nation’s most distinguished lawyers, including former federal prosecutors and public defenders as well as attorneys who have served in key roles on Capitol Hill, in federal agencies, and in state government,” the website states. “The remarkable experience of our attorneys is second only to the depth of their expertise. Lawyers at Zuckerman Spaeder offer substantive knowledge that encompasses such diverse areas as FDA law, legal and professional ethics, health care fraud, bankruptcy litigation, tax controversy, intellectual property, American Indian law, executive-level employment law, and nonprofit law, among others.”

4. Richards Kibbe &Orbe LLP

Founded over 25 years ago, Richards Kibbe & Orbe LLP has offices in Washingon DC, London, and New York City; and the firm has 65 lawyers spread throughout those three offices. The firm specializes in investment and business issues.

“As an institution, we continue to prize skill, commitment and team spirit over size; and our hallmark remains the ability to address difficult legal issues in a way that recognizes and satisfies our clients’ business goals,” the RK&O website states. “One measure of our success is a loyal client base that includes many of the country’s most successful hedge funds, investment banks, public companies and accounting firms.”

5. Cohen & Gresser

Founded in 2002, Cohen & Gresser is an international boutique that has 47 attorneys at its New York office. According to its website, the firm represents “clients in complex litigation, investigations, and corporate transactions throughout the world,” and it has seven specialties: Litigation and Arbitration, Intellectual Property and Technology, Privacy and Data Security, White Collar Defense, Corporate, Tax, and Employment Law.

6. Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello PC

Morvillo Abramowitz is a litigation boutique best known for its specialties in white collar defense, securities enforcement, and regulatory matters. Additionally, the New York firm has broad experience conducting internal investigations for corporate clients. The New York firm has 37 attorneys and was founded in 1973.

7. MoloLamken

New York City boutique, MoloLamken, has 30 attorneys who exclusively represent clients in complex litigation. The firm handles civil and criminal cases across the country, but their client base expands around the globe.

“We provide experienced advocacy before judges, juries, and courts of appeal, including the Supreme Court of the United States. We also represent clients in regulatory and criminal investigations and conduct internal investigations,” the website states. “Our lawyers are courtroom advocates, not merely paper litigators.  We possess years of collective experience acting for plaintiffs and defendants in high stakes disputes.”

8. Lankler Siffert & Wohl LLP

Located in Midtown Manhattan, Lankler Siffert & Wohl LLP concentrates on litigation and dispute resolution. The firm has 24 attorneys and nine partners. According to LawCrossing, “The firm represents individuals and entities in civil, regulatory and white-collar criminal matters before state and federal courts and grand juries, administrative and regulatory agencies, arbitration panels and professional disciplinary boards.”

9. Petrillo Klein & Boxer

Petrillo Klein & Boxer is a boutique firm with 13 attorneys and three partners. According to their website, they are “dedicated to partner-led client service at the highest level of professional commitment and quality.” They represent businesses as well as individuals in investigations and civil litigation, administrative proceedings, arbitration, and mediation. The firm is based in New York but handles cross-border matters.

10. Park Jensen Bennett

Park Jensen Bennett focuses on white collar defense, securities litigation, and complex commercial litigation. The eight attorney firm regularly conducts investigations for institutional clients; and according to the firm’s website, the partners are “seasoned criminal and civil litigators who served together as federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York and as litigation partners at major firms in Manhattan” and each have almost 25 years of litigation experience.

11. Spears & Imes

Spears & Imes has seven attorneys; and it focuses on civil litigation, white collar criminal defense, and regulatory matters for individuals and entities. The firm’s partners David Spears, Linda Imes, Joanna Hendon have been recognized by Chambers USA as experts in White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations, and the firm’s website states that they pride themselves on their written and oral advocacy.

12. Brune Law P.C.

Brune Law is the smallest firm on our list with only three attorneys, but it is a litigation force to be reckoned with. The firm, which is owned by Susan Brune, focuses on white collar litigation and trial work, and it was named a “Best Law Firm” for 2017 by U.S. News – Best Lawyers.

Harvard Law graduate Susan Brune was identified as one of the top lawyers in New York by Super Lawyers for her expertise in white collar matters.
