A man from Georgia was arrested Thursday and charged with the murder of a retired Jersey City, New Jersey police officer, according to The Jersey Journal. The officer was discovered face down in his home with an electrical cord wrapped around his neck back on March 1, 2012.
Anibal Cordero was arrested in Waynesboro, Georgia, his hometown. He was arrested for burglary and felony murder of former officer Frank Goggan, according to Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino.
Officers from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department all took part in the arrest.
“The return of this indictment is the culmination of a wide-ranging and collaborative, two-year investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, Jersey City Police Department Major Case Unit, the New York City Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the Waynesboro Police Department,” Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Guy Gregory said.
Goggan retired from the force in 1994. He received one commendation and one Excellent Police Service Award during his career.
Cordero will be extradited to Hudson County to face the charges. Investigators did not say how Cordero was connected to the crime.
Acting Jersey City Police Chief Philip Zacche said, “I must also take this time to recognize Jersey City Police Department members Sgt. Mark Conroy, retired Sgt. Scott McNulty, Detectives Paul Jensen, Detective Mark Inzinna and Detective Brian Rabbit for all their hard work and dedication in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.”Anibal Cordero Charged with Murder in Death of Retired Jersey City Police Officer by Jim Vassallo
