Once an attorney goes in-house he or she becomes an employee for all purposes, but still has to follow rules of professional conduct and ethics. The prime responsibility of an in-house employment counsel is to preempt problems and provide preventive measures ensuring many problems are solved even before they occur. Thus, it is the job of an in-house counsel handling employment issues to ensure that the company puts in place workplace practices that are in conformity with local, state and federal employment rulings.

Companies prefer to hire in-house attorneys with at least two to three years of private practice or in-house experience. Further the individual needs to know how to align business with legal decisions and adopt a commercial approach to problem solving.
