For litigation attorneys, Chicago is a great city. With its own distinctive thoughts on economics (Chicago School) diverse demographics and powerful economy, the city has no lack of disputes that lead to the courts. And for those seeking in-house litigation attorney jobs, Chicago has more than four hundred corporate law departments ready to try out.

Though at first glance it might seem that the job of an in-house litigation attorney isn’t as thrilling as that of an actual trial lawyer, the differences between those in private practice and in-house attorneys have blurred with time. The Supreme Court of Illinois has added Rule 716 to allow admission of in-house attorneys to the bar, and as long as the requirements of the rules are fulfilled, an in-house litigation attorney may do everything a trial litigator does, if the opportunity arises.

Litigation has always been exciting for most law students and given the chance a large number of them prefer to become litigation attorneys. The barriers, however, are high, because litigation requires both huge analytical skills as well as a quick wit. Clients are reluctant to try out new attorneys who do not have the required social capital or are not associated with big law firms or seniors.

This is why going in-house has become a favorite option for many budding litigation attorneys. They use the relatively sheltered position of an in-house job to gather skills, build connections and create the social capital required to become recognized in one of the toughest practice areas in the legal industry.

Chicago is also attractive for litigation attorneys because of its bustling economy. While not all employers may have established corporate law departments, almost all businesses have litigation and require in-house counsel to prepare and monitor legal issues and actions.

The city is home to more than 5000 law firms out of which at least 20 big law firms have litigation as their practice area. For those who want to shift from in-house positions to private practice later in life, Chicago provides sufficient opportunities.

According to data from Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Chicago metropolitan area is among those with highest employment levels for lawyers in the country. Since there is almost no field of practice that a litigation attorney may not adapt to, Chicago continues to be a favorite destination.
