Ni Nyampinga Program Helps Teen Girls in Rwanda Realize Their Worth

Ni Nyampinga

Ni Nyampinga is a magazine that is accompanied by a radio program in Rwanda. The magazine is published quarterly and the radio show occurs once per week. Each quarter; 90,000 copies of the magazine are published. The idea of the program is to help teenage girls in Rwanda realize their potential in life.

Bonnette is one of the girls who is interviewed in the video. She says the following about the program: “Ni Nyampinga is about girls’ achievement and dreams. Even when you are feeling weak, they encourage you to keep going. I want to be an entrepreneur. I want to build my own business as an electrician. Ni Nyampinga let me see that girls can succeed the same way as boys.”

Some of the girls have had their poems and stories published in the magazine, which also allows some of them to read their published works on the radio show.

The video ends with the following narration that pretty much says it all about the program:

“Role model stories celebrate girls who are doing something for themselves and starting conversations. Communities have a new understanding of girls and their potential. Ni Nyampinga is encouraging girls to reach the top of their hill. It’s the girl effect in action.”
