The real question for both Governor Romney and President Obama is, what will it take for our country to win? And since our country is intertwined with many others, the question becomes what will it take for the world to win? It is time that we recognize that our problems are not unique, and that our pain and frustrations are felt the world over.
Since economics is the ultimate arbiter of our fate, and since energy is still the largest part of the economic equation, let us look at what lies ahead: Lots and lots of energy, and from renewable sources. Moreover, new ways to double or even triple the output of our fossil fuels. Indeed, we are even coming up with ways to make these fuels from grass, plankton, or plain sea water -- by combining its CO2 with hydrogen.
Too futuristic you say?
Actually, the Navy is now testing such systems to make jet fuel for the fleet:

So let us cheer up a bit. Good things on energy are on the way for all of us -- including those in remote villages who will soon get electricity from the sun to join the information age.
