As the presidential campaign kicks into high gear, the war about dogs has taken flight between President Barack Obama and candidate Mitt Romney. On Tuesday, an excerpt from the president’s memoir, ‘Dreams from My Father,’ was posted on the internet. In the book, the president admits that he ate dog meat while a child in Indonesia. Here is the excerpt from the memoir:

“With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share.”

The excerpt was posted online in response to an interesting story from Romney’s life from 1983. The family decided to travel from Massachusetts to Canada, which is a 12-hour ride, and he strapped the family dog Seamus to the roof in his crate because there was no room for the dog in the car. Seamus got the ‘runs’ during the trip and Romney stopped to hose off the car and the dog. When this information was released, a resident named Scott Crider from Alabama created a group known as Dogs Against Romney. The group has 48,000 fans right now on Facebook as it tries to keep the story about Seamus in the news as much as possible.

Back in January, a campaign person for Obama, David Axelrod, tweeted a picture of the Obama dog, Bo, riding in the presidential limousine. The caption was:

“How loving owners transport their dogs.”

Earlier this week, Eric Fehrnstrom, a Romney campaign spokesman, retweeted the Axelrod tweet with the comment of:

“In hindsight, a chilling photo.”

Ben LaBolt, a spokesman from the Obama campaign, responded to the Fehrnstrom tweet with the following question:

“What’s the next attack @EricFerhn and the RNC will surface on a 6-10 year old?”
