Simpson Thacher & Bartlett is holding widespread, unannounced layoffs at its New York City headquarters, causing considerable confusion and consternation for lawyers and staff there.
On Friday evening, Simpson Thacher cut between 10 and 20 staffers, targeting its document duplication staff. Monday morning, the firm fired a large, undisclosed number of receptionists.
More layoffs are expected today, and its unknown if attorneys will be affected.
Staffers are calling yesterday “Black Monday.” It seems the unannounced layoffs of the receptionists led to day-long chaos and confusion, as clients could not locate attorneys.
New York City’s Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP is one of the oldest and most prestigious law firms in the United States. The firm employs over 800 attorneys in eight offices.

I was one of the staffers left behind and I must say they are a horrible firm, I am glad that I milk and steal as much time as I can from them.. which is why I use to try to convince my former co-workers to do…. simpson thacher

I was also a staffer that was let go.thank god i hated that place its a bunch bullshit in that place.

I worked there for 3 months and left – I couldn’t take it. Nasty attitudues and paralegals think they are superior to everyone. Thank God I had the sense to get out of there when I did.
